The crappy rendering at large distance strongly depends on the number of sprites, color and transparency.

EDIT : Maybe I could use the map shown here, to locate some plumes on Enceladus :

FYI, I see nothing at all (which didn't surprise me at all...as I have a laptop with shared memory graphics and openGL 1.4).

Yes, it requires OGL2 (for the moment). However, Chris is planning a major change in the code, about the sprites, so maybe it will be available on machines without OGL2.

Cham, I tested your enceladus plume, but what about a few more sprites like this PS mokup? On the left the original rendering. I guess the particules in space would not really follow a earth like plume and be much more diffused... What do you think? I guess you need a few points with specific sprites to render something similar. Perhaps 4 to 6 of those special sprites would be enough...

Here's a first model of a BH jet, superposed on my old animated jets. It's a bit timid, but it looks good in Celestia. More to come.

Interesting ! I combined the last two jests together and removed my old animated jets. Here's the result (pretty spectacular, in Celestia). Looks like highly energetic ! (click the pictures for a large version) :

I finally found a simple way to design some very nice *generic* jets for most purposes (black holes, galaxies, proto-systems, ...). Here's an example applied to a galaxy :

For the curious and the ones with some knowledge of Mathematica and Maple, here's the Mathematica code which is used to generate the jets :
