The red dwarf textures here are too dim, and probably also too red (maybe more appropriate for carbon stars?). The disc itself is quite bland too - BY Draconis stars should have major starspots.

John Whatmough did a pretty good rendition of a red dwarf here.

I have always *loved* that rendition of a red dwarf....

Considering many (of course, not all) red dwarfs are flare stars, including Gliese 581, I think that John W's rendition is rather appropriate.
Current Setup:
Windows 7 64 bit. Celestia 1.6.0.
AMD Athlon Processor, 1.6 Ghz, 3 Gb RAM
ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics

I used the image of the Sun posted by Dr S from the STEREO project to make this texture for Gl 581; it is a little more lively, I think. Perhaps I'll add some reddish flares to try to emulate John Whatmough's image as well, but I'm not sure that'll work.

Hey eburacum45,

for my taste this is about the first texture that looks remotely like an "active" red dwarf object and not like a painted "dead" Chrismas ball. But everybody's taste is different.

Well if thats what everyone wanted it to look like I had achieved that look several tries ago, so I guess I wiil go back and post some pics of that as well.

We have achieved very similar results I think. The only reason I didn't post any pics of it was because I thought it was to pink and I didn't think that was right. As Fridger says its all a matter of taste.

Past texture releases, Hmm let me think about it

Here is a slightly newer version of the above texture, brighter and probably more accurate then the older ne I posted.

I am just about ready for a release, I just need to tweak the texture a bit, I looks streched in a few places. Thats of course if everyone thinks its ready at this point. The darker reder Texture might be good for a Red Giant instead of a Red Dwarf. I may do that as well.
I think I might have another use for the dark Red Star texture.

Cool: the flares do look good, too.

According to their blackbody spectrum red dwarfs are supposed to be kind of orange; I suppose by having large yellow patches on a light red background we are approaching that ideal.

Don, the texture looks fine. I would suggest, however, a minor tweaking on the SSC commands for the atmosphere. Your screen shot shows a crisp edge to the star, as if the texture was a hot planet. I think it needs to fade into the atmosphere, as a gaseous star would do. That can be done I think by matching the color of the inner atmosphere with the texture's reddish/pink color so that the division between them is less evident.

tHANKS FOR THE EFFORT

I know this is an older subject, but still.

Is it possible to provide stars with a haze? Or maybe have a "planet" overlay above the star which is set to OmissiveTrue. Could the haze density be really high, and coloured to where it matches the inner atmosphere? That should make the surface-atmosphere impossible to discern (which would be awesome for stars, too bad it was decided that stars don't deserve atmospheres for 1.5.0pre2 and 3).

Also, when will the be added to the motherlode? I'm very interested in acquiring this add-on. :D

Hungry4info,

I will do a few experiments to test that and post the results for you.

Edit: Ok I played with the haze and atmosphere settings in both the old code and the new code. This is the best I can seem to get. I think there may be some limitations due to the way the texute is being drawn over the star.

If someone has any better ideas or want to play with this thing let me know and I will send it to you. I need to devote more time to other projects. So this project is up for grabs, any takers?

It looks very nice, so I would like to test and use it, Don, please.
