Hey everyone. I stumbled on this site today and I think it's a pretty neat app, not incredibly useful, but fun none the less. It maps all the users that enter their data on a Google Map.

To check out this map, click below or paste url into browser

Well, a Celestia fan map? Why not..
for years, there is a map for the Orbiter community :
http://orbinauts.dansteph.com/
For Celestia, on the French forum we have speaking about another solution, BTW of Google Earth: users could provide their own .kml file, so their placement could be directly added on the Google Earth Globe :-) (I planned to test a specific Celestia tag for that, but not really do a satisfying one)
I suppose that with the precise location listed by GE, it will be possible to convert each place into a celestia .ssc file, like the worlds-captilals one...

There's a couple of fans no-ones mentioned....

Extract this into .../Celestia/ main:
http://www.sitesled.com/members/tentsfo ... 20Fans.zip

then click on this:
cel://Follow/Sol:Earth:ISS/2006-02-04T1 ... 5&lm=49280

EDIT: I forgot to mention this: Select menu item Render->Locations, and make sure "Other Features" and "Label Features" are both enabled.

and enjoy! :P

EDIT: Don't bother if you haven't got the ISS.

Crude ISS is a part of Celestia package, isn't it??. Nice locations. There's an ISS following in GE, IIRC, but I don't know if we can link a private location with it. So, a Celestian location would be a better system for numberous Extra-Terrestrial Celestians, of course

It would have to be filtered by importance I guess. (I can't help wondering how Celestia performance would be affected by 4000 odd fan locations). I think I read somewhere that locations don't put a great load on Celestia.

Oops, Sorry El Christou, I translated the wrong text in Babelfish, This is what you said:
That seems to function only for the capitals or the large cities out of the fields Anglo-Saxon: it is not very practical. A solution with GE would be more viable, when a concentration of anybody in the same area is likely to make the chart illegible

I neglected to say in my original post that you need to go to Render->Locations in the Menu, and make sure that "Other Features" and "Label Features" are both enabled.

Hello, be careful of Babelfish, you don't find your proper words if you translate twice, in any language  This is because, when my poor english speaking can't help me, I write in French
So: What I try to explain with the Google Earth example, is that you can provide a more exact location, with some search, zooming in -for the better covered cities, even onto your bloc, house, etc. (and this is usefull for guys -like me- who don't know how to edit there own lat/long references, to create a Celestia location: GE provides a good approx.
I speaking about this stuff, because of the other mapping systems like frappr seem to me very, very limited: I've added my tag (curious word!) on Paris, because i can't register my real location. No references out of English areas, Just capitals. And even on English areas, what about of this stuff if 2.001 Celestians tag on London or Seattle, etc.
That's a problem. The Orbiter Fans Map I quoted have now a little similar problem: Lisibility. So, In My Humble Opinion, a real zoom system (WorlWind, Keyhole/GoogleEarth... or Celestia!!!) is a more efficient way.

Hello Andrea, don't you provide, sometimes ago a Google Earth location? Or just a GE pic, I don't remenber. But in this case, you can provide a GE or, more interesting, a Celestia location.
We can try to edit a Celestian community.kml (GE) or aCelestians_loc.ssc (Celestia) :!:

"perplexe. plateformes,"
J'esp??re que des aides. Mecri !
приветÑ

Your English is very good actually.

Name congestion would also be an issue for Celestia, if everyone in Paris for example gave the same Lat/Long without refining it down to the nearest arcsec. (And you'd probably have to zoom in very close on congested locations to resolve individual names).

Jeam Tag wrote:We can try to edit a Celestian community.kml (GE) or aCelestians_loc.ssc (Celestia)

I would consider editing and/or hosting a Celestians_loc.ssc on my website which would mean "quys who don't know how to edit there own lat/long references, to create a Celestia location" could just provide the lat/long and then the SSC would be updated periodically for download.

With the Help of Google Earth, I can provide a location, like your 2 IIS 'nauts ones.

Code: Select all

Location "Jeam Tag" "Sol/Earth"
{
LongLat [2.303500548989796 48.65804996823399 0]
Importance 100.00
Type "Other"
}
My ancient testing, some years ago, to edit Fridger's Gazeeters to add my little town didn't have this precision.
Jeam

But another Type would be create: not 'Other', but 'Celestians'.
... and would be add in the location browser

Translators are absolutely funny robots, if we can spare time to play with... Babel* is curious: for my first messages on thes forums, It help me, a little, to correct some words, but it seems to me that this years, his many changes are awful: a single sentence is absolutely misunderstanded(!
..and what about 'MachinEntity'?: His message in this thread is absolutely strange, even in French. ('Hors-sujet') Don't know how to answer... Jeam
