Oh and I'd be happy to put the spreadsheet up, but it's a bit messy. I used it to create the plume data and then used a MS Word mail merge (yes pathetic) to build the file.

Believe me, the second I can use point sprites (in a fast animation), volumetric fills or repetitious parabolic path motion (a GOTO command ?). I will retool these volcanoes in a heartbeat.
I just wanted that spewing lava on a parabolic (circular for now) path. I am considering a retooling of them anyway to get a more "filled in" feeling rather than that dome shape. I just need some time (isn't that always the truth).
I uploaded to the Motherlode either yesterday or Tuesday...

In the absolute, Chris point sprites ARE the solution for this kind of stuff (real 3D), now the good point of Buggs' addon is that it works on all configs (no need of OGL2).
Now a nice one would be a mix of both, because Buggs one do have some "structure", some "nerve" while Chris' one is more "fluffy"... a balance of both methods whould be IMHO very nice...
BTW Buggs, no way to add a row of rotating tubes (textured the same way) at the intersection of the plume and the ground to simulate some messy dust and dissimulate a bit the crude intersection?

Not at all Bob (and anyone that's interested). Right now it's unrestricted and just requires an email address. If it gets too unruly I may have to tighten up security like it is here...

I need to speak with Andrea so we can get our Ptolemy work posted.

The problem with Buggs Moran and Chris addon is that only ONE volcano (Tvashtar)had been rendered.This happened MAYBE because point sprites and volumetric fills are too system demanding and all volcanoes at the same time would cause slowdown in most systems,even in my not so modest computer.So BOTH models can be used,in alternated ways...

Point Sprites may be very very useful, but when it comes to Io's volcanoes ... well ....
Here is a screenshot of Chris's Point Sprites, using 1.5.0pre4. I cannot believe that if we visited Io now, these eruptions would be so bright!
Is there a way to tone down their brightness at least 60% or more?

Yeah,
The specularity - for lack of a better phrase - is also a problem with
Bugg's' add-on. You can see bright spots on the moon from large
distances away. Methinks that this is a Celestia bug though. <shrug>
