Actually, Uranus is nearing aphelion, or it's furthest distance from the sun. Uranus is actually excited about having solar heat concentrated on it's equatorial regions. Later!

Hey Bob! Could you knock out a texture yourself from one of these images you mentioned?

Just a thought.

Well, as usual, I simply did not know that...

You mean that it's equator is getting excited?
At any rate, it's still beautiful now.

Thanks, Brain-Dead

Yeah, if fact I have been experimenting with doing just that...

Unfortunately, I'm not blessed with the graphical abilities of some of
you people, but I'm getting there.

Thanks, Bob

Okay,

These are my FIRST attempts, so don't yell at me too much...

Uranus WITH my cloud texture displayed:
Image

And, Uranus WITHOUT the cloud texture displayed:
Image

Your observations, comments, mutterings?

I really tried to make this realistic, but my talents aren't that good and
true color images of Uranus are very hard to come by. Don't know
why, but the very best one I found is no longer available on the web.

Lemme know what can be done to improve these please. The
textures are currently 2048x1024, but these display images are
obviously of a lower resolution so that I can lower the maximum
usage to my web site.

Thanks, Brain-Dead

Looks nice, Bob.

Can you post your 2048X1024 textures here ? I would love to use them on some exoplanets.

Texture look awsome, looks like It would also make a good class II/III exoplanet texture too. I would certanly download :)

Gee Whiz...

I thought you guys were gonna crucify me for even attempting to
think I knew what I was doing here.

What gives? Can we hear from someone who KNOWS what Uranus
looks like now? I mean, it's all very nice that you guys wish to use the
textures for extra-solar planets, but have they any merit as the real
textures of Uranus. I tried to get that, honest.

At any rate, they will be uploaded to the ML today if that's what
everyone wants. I'll also put them on my web site.

You don't mind if I wait a bit to see how the science
guys are gonna react though do you?

Thanks, Brain-Dead

Okay, I appreciate that, Bob, but I've already noticed that it ain't right
by any means...

The colors are way too bright, and the center of the planet does NOT
have the clouds centered in the middle the way I have them here.

Obviously, it needs more work... I'll save the originals shown here so
that you guys can use them for extra-solar planets if you like. I'll
e-mail them to whoever wants them.

EDIT: Just send me a PM if you want the above textures e-mailed to you.

Thanks, Brain-Dead

Im sure the resident scientists will like it too, they will probably give you some helpful critism. I still think its cool anyway, but of course as it is your texture, you should release it to us when 'your' happy with it so take all the time you need :)

How many inaccuracy can have a photoretouch's color picker picked out on an already small scientific texture? Just a live-or-dead question...

Bob,

I think that part of the problem is that the outer planets simply don't have many features that can be seen in the wavelengths we call "visible". In order to see interesting structure, they have to be imaged in the infrared, which penetrates deeper into their atmospheres.

Some comparisons are shown at

Yeah, I had seen that link Selden ( and a bunch of others too) but I
had what I thought was a true color picture from the Keck
Observatory. Unfortunately, I can't find it on the web now, even
though I still have a copy on my PC to look at. Mayhap I was simply
misled by some caption?

At any rate, I'll play with it some more. Can't hurt, and what I've
done so far apparently makes for a good extra-solar texture.

Thanks, As usual, Brain-Dead

I admire your desire for honest feedback.

I agree with Selden.

Honestly, the Uranus texture would, as has already been said, make an excellent Exo-class II/III texture. As to whether or not it should be used on Uranus... I personally wouldn't. This is not to suggest I don't like the texture, I do like it, I think it's very pretty. It appears to be modeled after non-visible light though. Remember Uranus looked very monotonous in Voyager 2 images. The bands across the surface appear to be based off recent infrared images, most of which indeed show those bands.

Is this what Uranus would look like now? (remembering that Uranus has moved quite a bit since it's Voy2 encounter, and it may appear different now due to seasons).
Current Setup:
Windows 7 64 bit. Celestia 1.6.0.

Well, the reason I started on this topic at all was that I found some
very interesting pictures of Uranus in a state of excitement because
its equator is apparently focussed at the Sun now. I had viewed what
I thought were true-color images of clouds and dark spots, but
apparently these were ALL taken in the infrared. Could have sworn
that I had a true-color image though. <shrug>

At any rate, I'll continue to play with it as I get the time. Can't
hurt to learn some more about how to make textures.

Thanks all, Brain-Dead
