After starting Celestia, if I try to go directly into full screen mode (i.e. I don't first select a resolution from "Select Display Mode...") Celestia crashes.

Kolano,

As you should know by now, most crashing problems are due to system problems related to bugs in graphics drivers, not to Celestia.

You should include the software versions in your sig, not just your hardware:

What operating system and version are you running?
What version of ForceWare are you running?
Which version(s) of Celestia has this problem?

There are several different methods of going into full screen mode which do not use the menu. Exactly what one are you using?

What is your display device?
What is its native screen resolution if it has one?
What resolution does Celestia use for full screen mode?

What operating system and version are you running?
XP SP2

What version of ForceWare are you running?
Latest Beta, 169.01

Which version(s) of Celestia has this problem?
That of this thread, Celestia 1.5.0 prerelease 4

What is your display device?
CRT

What is its native screen resolution if it has one?
NA

What resolution does Celestia use for full screen mode?
It doesn't, one hadn't been selected yet which I'm guessing is the issue. After selecting a resolution everything works fine. Perhaps Celestia needs to select a default full screen resolution.

It is quite clear that the fullscreen mode in Windows is buggy since a long time and involves some kind of "witchcraft" to be set up properly. ;-)

If one is not taking great care, Celestia SWITCHES the display resolution of the computer into 640x480 (!) to which it is clearly not authorized.

There have been various posts by people in the past, notably by Andrea, how to convince Celestia to display fullscreen mode and to remain in this mode. (Search engine!).

Funny you should say that... they don't work for you if you're using the DDS VT cloud maps.
...but those cloud maps are known for their limitations (Cloud speed must be 0, etc).

Minor consequence for me anyway, I rarely go to Earth's surface anyway.
Current Setup:
Windows 7 64 bit. Celestia 1.6.0.
AMD Athlon Processor, 1.6 Ghz, 3 Gb RAM
ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics

Just updated my ForceWare to 163.69 and ALL of the above still applies
even though I have also given complete control of the OpenGL and Nvidia
settings to my favorite program - celestia.exe - via the Nvidia Control
Panel Advanced 3d settings.

I can ONLY see shadows in Render Mode OpenGL 2.0, but I can't use that
mode because of the specularity problems it gives me. I'm using the
OpenGL vertex program because this path allows the best view of what I
can see on my screen.

All of this is simply FYI...

Thanks, Bob

Daniel,

What method are you using to tell Celestia to draw Io's NightTexture?

John's instructions tell you to modify solarsys.ssc, which as you should know by now I think is a very bad idea. If that's what you did, then it was lost when you updated Celestia.

The easiest and safest way to modify solarsys.ssc is to put the following ssc file in your Extras folder:

IoNight.ssc

Code: Select all

 Modify "Io" "Sol/Jupiter" { NightTexture "IoNight.*" }

Where you put the texture file itself is up to you, but I created a texture/medres folder for it in extras.

I still have that problem with my graticule add-on that I had in the previous pre-version. The program runs, but at a highly truncated rate, to the point where if I try to move the POV to a large degree, the program will actually crash.

I haven't had a chance to try this version with all combinations of the graticules (such as with only one mesh, with two, with none but with the nebulas activated, and so forth), but I will try to do so soon.

And again, in pre-2, all of this worked just fine.

Regardless, I'm very pleased to see a new version!

Are you kidding me? I modify MY file almost every day... 8)

Of course, I don't mind restoring my system every hour or two either, but
that's not MY fault.

This damned Vista operating system is collection of pure junk. Others
beware.

Welcome to my Vista world Bob. I have managed to work out most of my Vista demons when it comes to Celestia. From my understanding, the built in clouds shadows are only supposed to be visible under OpenGL anyway. I wasn't aware of Chris back porting the ability into the more basic modes. Last I heard it wasn't available under OpenGL and Nvidia shaders either.

I have downloaded this build but have yet to install it. This will make I think the 6th parallel install across my drives.

Don,

now I am really getting curious. Why so many at the Windows front? I know you are not talking about Linux here. If these are all Vista, I would really give this OS a kick ;-)

I have a well up-to-date Win XP SP2 on my 2 GHz Core 2 Duo/2GB ram notebook (DELL latitude D620) which is rock stable. Moreover, a perfectly working Quadro NVS 110M Nvidia graphics card with latest officially released driver. There is just never anything that might justfy another try with a parallel installation. I doubt that any of your six parallel installations can be any better than my standard one ;-) . Vista is obviously not even worth a thought before the release of respective service packs.
Stability and controlled performance is all that counts, right?

Hey Fridger,

No I mean having multiple installs of Celestia on several drives, spanning several versions. I guess it could be taken that I have multiple installs of Vista. Thats funny, trust me, one install of Vista is more than enough trouble.

The ONLY reason I have it at all, is because it came pre-installed on my new
PC. Just to show you what I mean though, I checked the system logs, and
found that I had experienced 586 MAJOR errors (not warning errors,
but critical errors) in the two weeks since I bought the thing. I NEVER had
this trouble with XP.

I honestly think that I'm going to wipe this system completely, and start
over with a fresh install of XP. One other interesting note: This OS has
already gone to service pack one, and service pack 2 is close behind. I
already installed more Windows updates on this machine than I had on
my other machine during 14 years.

Bob, what about keeping this PC for your grandson for Christmas and bought you a nice Mac RIGHT NOW?

Now THERE's a thought... At least that way, Microsoft won't be able to
control how I use my media player, or demand constant connection to the
web.

Nah, never mind. I've already got too much to learn. <grin>

Humm... you would be really surprise how easy is life on a Mac, specially for brain dead like us...

You should really do a visit to your nearest Apple provider, at least for curiosity... You will not regret it!

If anyone is thinking of getting a Mac for Celestia, just make sure you don't get one with Intel GMA graphics. It doesn't appear to support all of Celestia's graphical features. The MacBook might be glossy and all chic, but its GMA just doesn't cut it.

I was about to suggest Bob to get a Mac too. OS X (Tiger) is so clean, so stable, so perfect, it's really unbelievable what Apple have done here.
Image
And it's literally virus free !
Image
OS X is the full Unix power under the hood.

The only major problems with Macs are their video card drivers, which may sucks at times. Image
