2k DDS texture pack for newbies

Hi! As in demand here and there about better textures than the default's ones, I've assembled a 2k (2048x1024) DDS texture's pack for Celestia. The basic goal of this pack is that of giving to all the newbies a first step toward the high resolutions textures and it doesn't claim for other pretensions, with the except, of course, of to be unsuited for the advance user, who has the own personal. Clouds, rings, specular and night maps rests in many cases .PNG but with more enhanced versions respect to the ones usually shipped with the main distribution. Rather, this pack may be seen as propaedeutic run through the Celestia's graphical potentiality. The solarsys.ssc files which manages it are up to date and pratically all the main bodies have the normal maps.

For further detail on how to download and how to install it for both 1.4.1 and 1.5.0 pre 3:

http://fenerit.webng.com/4719/index.html

I've splitted it in order to match the upload's limit of the server, sorry.

The pack has been well try out, because is part of my Celestia's settings; but feedbacks are noteworthy, because it can be improved in anticipation of to be hosted on Motherload later on.
Never at rest.

Thanks Fenerit , for creating this pack and its comprehensive guide.
Ofcourse many of us allready have our own textures with higher
resolution, but for the beginner it is a good start.
One question: you seem to have skipped the moon's texture,
can you add this one too, in order to be "complete" ?

**edit ** sorry , my mistake , the moon actually was present

Don't worry... The pack actually lack of star's texture, minor moon texture and of several normal maps since these latters doesn't show themselves on the 3DS models as well as on CMOD, so it would be useless. I've tried to reprocess in Anim8tor the Jack Higgins jovian minor moons from 3DS to CMOD's meshes in order to apply as bumpmap the normalmap, but it doesn't works; so the pack it's obviously incomplete. It's just a start, though. It complete without to alter radically the basic one.

Many thanks Lord and ElChris; I've noticed certain requests in this way, so I've attempt to replay it. I know, I know that you have the best ones...
I'm planning to change my machine, now very obsolete; then I myself shall be able to see the 4k and over... 8)

Don't forget Celestia DO need some official packs, so if you want to work on this, what about opening a thread, then ask people what are the actual best choice for each textures (there are several solutions out there)...

Yes, indeed. My only problem, at the present, is the 2k limit of my graphic card. I should to make the packs or even the normal maps up to 8k (beyond this I get an advice of "not enough memory") but just "blind", without testing. So, I should to receive suggestions just for the 2k resolution; above that, does task for the other Celestian's the choices and discussions about. What title could be the best fit?

I suppose better wait for your next config, because working without testing is not very cool...
Now for a title, perhaps "In search for a 4k (or 8k) official texture pack..."? what do you think?

(BTW, there is a draft here about Highres pack: http://shatters.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9976)

Sound enough "spocky" to seem good. No, too anonymous for the new users. What about of: "Texture packs creation"?

2 problems!

Post #12by danielj » 21.09.2007, 14:10

Some DDS textures didn??t work.There are Mercury.dds,moon.dds,Io.dds,Mimas.dds,Phoebe.dds,Miranda.dds and Neptune.dds.
It wasn??t my video card because I have a 7600 GT.
Also, when I run for a planet to a planet or a moon to another,Celestia locks down.It didn??t run out of memory because I have 2 GB of RAM and all textures are ONLY 2k.
The other planet is that Pluto disappeared from Solar System.
These were my impressions...

Tell me please what Celestia's version do you have, so, for better check in.

I see the texture from "I" to "P"; which are in the same pack; it could be corrupted. For Pluto I may check for .SSC, perhaps.

Ok, Danielj; I've rebuild only the "wrong" textures:

http://fenerit.webng.com/files/textures.zip
tested ok

Note that for me works good; very strange. The only problem was effectively Phoebe, I've removed the string to the CMOD model; probably you doesn't have it. For what concern Pluto, mind that he is not in solarsys.ssc for 1.4.1, so check asteroids.ssc and change the textures extension; although it would to use the default ones.

new solarsys.ssc for 1.4.1 is here:

http://fenerit.webng.com/files/solarsys.ssc.txt

Many thanks for your testing, I've appreciate a lot! 8) Tell me what happen with these news, it's important; then I'll update the archives.

First, the download below stops when it reaches 43% and then,it says that it is a homepage.Second, actually there is nothing wrong with your previous textures. The problem was that the last set of textures(the fourth) didn??t unzip automatically to the textures>medres, but to Celestia root directory. Now everything is OK.But Pluto isn??t in asteroids or Kuiper belt ssc!

Ok, DanielJ. I do not recognize your problem. The fourth pack goes unzipped in the right path and the update pack comes down well, without stopping. So I'm waiting for other users who would to find the same problems. For what concern Pluto, it's strange this lack but stay tuned because I'll send the strings about it.

I downloaded the 2k archive. Also for me a number of the *.dds files were not working.

I remember by heart,

venus-surface
pluto-lok
titan
...

Half of your Mercury texture is PHANTASY ;-) (Moon craters? ) . You sure know that only about half has been photographed...

Did you really RE-download your archive, unpacked and tested it in your Celestia installation? This I don't believe.

Wait a moment... I've tested the main packs before sending it to server by ERASING all the textures in my ..\medres\ directory then re-unzipping the zipped ones; meanwhile I've tested yesterday (21) the update by OVERWRITING the extents ones. For the download problem, I've download it and nothing as stopped and no web page have been displayed. For the unpack problem, being today (22) at another computer, I've created a empty directory called Celestia and I've unpacked there. The ..\textures\medres\ with all textures have been gone there. All the textures are zipped from my private Celestia directory and are what I use from about 1 year without problem. The only problem which one, effectively, I thought, could be found was Triton, because it's a 4k, but being mipmapped, it's able to show itself on my machine; when I've try with others, my graphic card has failed. To ear DanielJ would seem to work even the sended ones and the problem was about the different directory in which the zip program does place it. I do not recognize this latter problem today on another machine. The pack has the directory structure built in, so no drag 'n' drop to be done if not in ..\medres.

Mercury is fantasy as fantasy have found on Motherlode having a good resolution to be resized, and this is part of the problem discussed elsewhere, nevertheless there is the l-o-k option.

For Venus, Titan and Pluto-lok I'll try it tonight (23), but until yesterday it worked, sorry if you do not rely of my words, but all problems tends to believe in file corruption after exit from my machine and problems of the server, nor for corrupted original textures, which, repeat, it works very good on my machine.
