I'm seeing this as a new problem with 1.5.0pre3, installed using the installer, Windows XP SP2. It's intermittent, however, and I still haven't tracked down a reliable precipitant.
One observation that may (or may not) be of use is that, when the question marks appear, if I open Solar System Browser I see clear text for everything except those bodies that are defined in solarsys.ssc: the planets + Pluto, together with a small number of major moons, appear as question marks.
Star Browser is well behaved. Add Bookmark gives me default text as question marks. Eclipse Finder gives me a different sort of gibberish: "Earth" is rendered as "?‡?????‘?–", for instance.

almost all text replaced with question marks.

I'm not sure either what the cause is, but I also experienced this on first install using 1.5.0pre3 installer.
Here's what I did.. (not nescessarily in this order):
First install was to the default... C:\Program Files\Celestia
Renamed folder to C:\Program Files\Celestia 1.5.0pre3 (as always)
Updated all shortcuts setting target and starting directory to match C:\Program Files\Celestia 1.5.0pre3.
At some point, I found cel-URL's weren't working, so I re-installed (My memory is not 100%, but this time I think I just overwrote the "Celestia 1.5.0pre3" folder on install, rather than installing and renaming)
At some point before completing all these changes I ran the installation and noticed the problem. (I'm pretty sure that this was before the second install)
Since completing all these steps however, haven't noticed the problem.
(Note: I've also edited celestia.cfg as usual to re-direct extras folder etc...)
I suggest:
firstly check all shortcuts are setup correctly (target and start folder). Check both Start Menu and Desktop shortcuts if you have them.
If all shortcuts are correct and problem still occurs, then re-install and then re-check the shortcuts.
Hope this gives some clues.

I am getting question marks all over including most of the context menu. The only objects that display their name correctly are stars, comets, galaxies and spacecraft.
Using the tilde key when I start the program I get question marks in the first part of line one and then the text is okay until the next texture line is loaded. Example below:
????? ???? ?? ???textures/medres/earth.png
Creating ordinary texture: 2048x1024
????? ???? ?? ???textures/medres/earth-clouds.png
Creating ordinary texture: 1024x512
????? ???? ?? ???textures/medres/moon.jpg
Creating ordinary texture: 1024x512
????? ???? ?? ???textures/medres/moonbump.jpg
Creating ordinary texture: 1024x512
????? ???? ?? ???textures/medres/astar.jpg
Creating ordinary texture: 512x256
I have also noticed that selecting the sun most of alphabetic characters are display as ???? and some of the Sun's numeric data is also bad.
I am wondering if there is a possiblity of a corrupted dowmload link and wonder if a new download can be provided. I have tried every suggestion I have found on the forums but none are any help.

Is anyone seeing this problem when they install 1.5.0pre3 using the self-extracting installer? Or is it only a problem when building from CVS?

Using this batch file to start Celestia with resolve this issue...
Celestia.bat
Celestia.bat
Code: Select all
set LANGUAGE=en
call Celestia.exe
System:
Asus A8N-SLI Premium nForce4 SLI
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+
2xeVGA GeForce 7800 GTX 256MB
2gb Dual Channel DDR (400) 3200

I found a different solution.

Thanks for the tip. I will keep it handy in case I should need it.
My Solution:
I have no clue as to why this should work but it did. I had already checked my control panel Regional & Language verifing that everything was correct. I started the program and the problem was still there.
I then went to the Celestia program folder and opened the folder called 'locale' and could not find anything wrong. I started the program and all of the question marks were gone with everything reading as it should. Success!!
I don't know if it was a delayed reaction to verifying my language set via the control panel or opening that folder but whatever it worked.
I did one thing different the last two installs and that was to install Celestia to a folder I named "Celestia.1.5.0pre3". I had cleared out everything from previous installs including folders on the last install and any links from previous installs. There is a good possibility that there was a conflict between v1.4.1.0 and v1.5.0pre3 in the registry and it just had to work out the correct links.
I know my registry has plenty of entries from my previous installs and this could cause a problem in the future. I am just hoping that it will not.
