win2000 on a Thinkpad

Trying to run Celestia 1.2.4 on an IBM Thinkpad laptop:

Win2000 SP2
1Ghz Pentium
512MB
S3 Savage/IX chipset
1400x1050, 16-bit color

Setup went fine, but when I start Celestia, the CPU pegs at 100% and the Celestia window freezes. (I have to kill it with Task Manager). Any suggestions? Looks like a cool program.

Joel,

Windows always shows Celestia using 100% of the CPU. It's continuously recalculating the contents of its display window. Even so, the frame rate sometims is rather slow.

I'm not sure why it'd be locking up.

You should make sure you have the latest drivers for your graphics chipset. Celestia makes extensive use of the latest OpenGL routines. Be sure to get them from IBM's web site.

Another possibility is that there isn't quite enough grahics texture memory. You might try renaming Celestia's directory \Celestia\textures\medres to something else (like \medresNO). That's probably the easiest way to force Celestia to use only the lores textures. It generally loads much faster that way, too. If this helps, you can then recreate the \medres directoy and copy some of the medres textures into it to see if there's one in particular causing problems.

The opening screen shows Jupiter's moon Io. In the process of getting there, the viewpiont goes by several other bodies. Loading their surface textures could be part of the problem, perhaps. (I'm just guessing.)

I hope this helps a little.
