no, only a star database.
the brightnes of the galaxies can also be adjusted with SHIFT+( and SHITF+)

OK, why do overexpose the galaxies so much?

yes, it also looks cool to me. i like it. although i would prefer a rendering of the smc for example like this: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bild:Small ... _cloud.jpg

This is NOT a natural color view of the SMC galaxy, like most other images released for the public. Their main emphasis is to enhance colors such as to make the universe look more "exciting" ;-)

The released images from the Spitzer infrared telesope are a perfect example of this attitude. I think they have even hired a "space artist" who has to produce these "exploding" colors. All these are false colors and have nothing to do with reality.

In contrast, Celestia attempts to do /scientific/ visualization, notably with naked eye vision as the major rendering guideline. If you have ever looked at a galaxy through a big telescope visually, then you know that galaxy colors are very faint at best. Through amateur telescopes, one can barely perceive any colors.

Where can we get the new Saturn rings?

John,

as was often pointed out, the Cassini imaging mainly provides info about the ring albedo. What is required in addition, are independent hires data about the transparency profile across the rings! Otherwise the rings do NOT represent in any way an accurate display!

In your first image on the left it seems to me that you indeed got a problem with the transparency data...

I think I'll post this one; a 'gravity tug', a model of a NASA concept for moving asteroids to which I have added a little refinement.
In my version, the tug increases its effective mass by filling a flexible container with asteroid material, which it then suspends on a long tether close to the asteroid to lower its effecive centre of gravity and therefore the gravitational attraction betweenn the tug and the asteroid. (I've added a little bit of blue fuzz to represent the motors firing).

I wasn't going to post any pictures, since there are others who are far better at this than I am. But then I figured... what the heck.

These have all been done in 1.5.0pre2, and with the new atmosphere declarations. I'm slowly getting a handle on those, but there is still a lot to learn. For now, I'm using them to achieve a visual effect, rather than an entirely realistic one.

These are all worlds for my ArcBuilder setting, and are posted on my Flickr account.

These are links to the largest sizes, each roughly 1mb in size. I'll post more as I create more add-ons, and update old ones.

Here's the latest world for ArcBuilders. Named Phione IV, it orbits Beta COmae Berenices. The main drive behind this world was the use of Fractal Terrains for continental generation. It shows promise, although I still tweaked a few things to give a bit more of a natural look.

I've linked to a different type of page, this time, where you can choose your resolution size and leave comments.

Dallas, your screenshots are pretty awesome. I especially like the one with the spaceship and the star in the background.

Me too. The only problem is every time I see it, the theme to "The Black Hole" starts in my head.

Thanks! Each one was generated a little differently. I'm experimenting with another method right now. With luck, I'll have something to show tomorrow.

My latest ArcBuilder world:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/maastrichian/430596431/

I used a random select and copy method to create the texture on this one. I'm probably going to take a bit of a break on these worlds; after a while, the Earth-like worlds tend to look alike, and while I still have several to make, per ArcBuilder setting parameters, I also have many non-Gaian worlds that I need to make. I think I'll experiment with those for a while.
