Jupiter and Neptune textures, anyone?

Post #1by Guest » 20.11.2002, 06:38

Hello!

Last night I tried my best to create ring textures for Jupiter and Neptune and guess what? I am no good at creating textures!
Could someone create textures for the rings of Jupiter and Neptune? Please? :roll:

Neptune? Does Neptune have rings?
I'm trying to teach the cavemen how to play scrabble, its uphill work. The only word they know is Uhh and they dont know how to spell it!

Yes. Neptune has complete rings. Not faint arcs. You might learn more at http://www.seds.org/billa/tnp/neptune.html

This picture shows a twisted ring around Neptune. Like the above link, this picture is hosted by The Nine Planets.

Well if you have photoshop open a new texture, select transparent background, at 1024 x 64 and draw a couple of faint white lines next to each other...blur it a bit and save as a .png file...thats it...jupiter may be a bit same, all depends on what you want for detail....Who knows at one point I might make some of my own and post them here...

Well here's some pics of the new Neptune rings i just made. I created a low bright texture to make them faint but visible :D I used this pic as a reference:

I used the data from Solarviews to make the ring declaration for the .scc file, see it at http://www.solarviews.com/eng/neptune.htm so they are accurate :P

Ok, here you are :wink:

The PNG texture: http://www.la-guarida.com/Celestia/Text ... -rings.png

The ring declaration:

Rings
{
Inner 41900
Outer 62930
Texture "neptune-rings.png"
}

It is me again, the guy who created this topic. OK, how about making a Jupiter ring texture? :cool:

chris: Could you include the Neptune rings in 1.2.5 final?

Wow! Looks very nice - excellent job!
Thanks praesepe! :D

Well, it looks great from here, anyway...
I can't seem to get the rings to show up on my pc. I added the declaration to the solarsys.ssc file and saved the neptune-rings.png to lo/med/hi res folders (just in case :wink: ) but I'm still not seeing the rings. (Saturn and Uranus are showing their rings fine, btw).

Here's what I've got for Neptune in the .ssc:

"Neptune" "Sol"
{
Texture "neptune.jpg"
Color [ 0.75 0.75 1.0 ]
HazeColor [ 0.6 1 0.75 ]
HazeDensity 0.35
Radius 25225
Oblateness 0.027

CustomOrbit "vsop87-neptune"
EllipticalOrbit
{
Period 164.793
SemiMajorAxis 30.0690
Eccentricity 0.0086
Inclination 1.7692
AscendingNode 131.722
LongOfPericenter 44.971
MeanLongitude 304.880
}

RotationPeriod 16.11
Obliquity 28.03
EquatorAscendingNode 0 # 49.235

Albedo 0.62
}

Rings {
Inner 41900
Outer 62930
Texture "neptune-rings.png"
}
}

What did I do wrong? Please help! 8O

Cheers!
Sean

PS: I would love to see Jupiter's rings as well... 8)

try miving the rings section so it will look like this:
"Neptune" "Sol"
{
Texture "neptune.jpg"
Color [ 0.75 0.75 1.0 ]
HazeColor [ 0.6 1 0.75 ]
HazeDensity 0.35
Radius 25225
Oblateness 0.027

CustomOrbit "vsop87-neptune"
EllipticalOrbit
{
Period 164.793
SemiMajorAxis 30.0690
Eccentricity 0.0086
Inclination 1.7692
AscendingNode 131.722
LongOfPericenter 44.971
MeanLongitude 304.880
}
RotationPeriod 16.11
Obliquity 28.03
EquatorAscendingNode 0 # 49.235
Rings {
Inner 41900
Outer 62930
Texture "neptune-rings.png"
}
Albedo 0.62
}

maybe that will work...

Yep - that did the trick! Thanks! :D

I arranged it that way after comparing it to the way Uranus was written - I guess this doesn't apply to Neptune? :?

Looks fantastic! Thanks again! 8)

Is neptune-rings.png a PNG (short for Portable Network Graphics) that is 1024x64? It is the only ring texture size supported by Celestia.
