Preview : Barnard Loop / Orion

Hi,

Some of us are impatient to hear celestia's news :wink:, to know if someone is hearing here and is working on new stuff (I'm one of the first of them :lol:)

I try to do my best to build some good add-ons but my short knowledge in astrophysics limits the way in which I understand the astro-photographs.

So here are a couple of questions ...

I'm working on Barnard Loop in Orion Nebula (based on astrophotos of Robert Gendler and SSRO starshadows)

I plan to include many components in 3D (as far as i could :lol: ) :
M42
Image

IC434
Image

HorseHead
Image

and many others.

But when I look at the main cloud, I don't know if the way I plan to do things is realistic.
I will be pleased if somebody could give me an enlightened opinion (even if nobody could go to see closely)

I imagine two tore of gaz, as shown on the drawing below

If I create a 3D model it looks like the folling

I don't know if this model could be a valid assumption :?:
Or if it's physically impossible.

Can you help me ?

I think you are looking at more of a bubble than torus structure. I suppose the bubble would have been caused by the region of starbirth around the Orion Nebula or perhaps supernovae millions of years ago. The upper lobe could be a bubble as well... I would have to do more digging to confirm any of this.

Another thing I would suggest is turning down the red. Your red is the right tone but way too bright. Barnard's Loop is very faint.

For sure, color is another big question :
- a lot of pictures are a combinaison of ultra sensitive photos
- other mixe visible light and infra-red
- other use false colors to enhance details
...

In real life, without all these computed pictures, things are often very faint ...

Where is the truth in all this astrophotos ?

And what is the best choice for texture's add-ons ??? :
- visible colors but less details
- enhanced details but far from human visible colors or real world.

May be, it needs a new celestia's feature : manage several levels of textures for nebula in a similar way than texture resolution, but with visible light, infra red, UV, X ray (Wow, big challenge to build an add-on :wink: )


I would be pleased if you point me to any article you have found about Barnard's Loop structure (if you have had some time to look at this in your busy life :wink: ).

This has actually come up many times. One thing that could help (listen in developers) is alternate textures for any selected object (i.e. right click to select different wavelengths). I'll keep you posted if I dig anything up.

Hey jll,

I found this paper. http://articles.adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-iarticle_query?1974PASP...86..616B It may have some structural info you can use. I don't think the gas velocity information will be relevant, but there are quite a few density/radio maps and a cutaway of the nebula.

This paper is more recent and contains more useful velocity info related to the structure.

For a better effect, download M42 and IC434 from Motherlode if needed :wink:
