Atmosphere Guage 3.0 to SSC Editor 1.0

Post #1by Rassilon » 27.05.2006, 03:45

I decided to move this dicussion to a more relevant location from Purgatory...

Dollan heres a WIP of what I discussed in this thread

http://celestiaproject.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9593&start=30

http://celestialvisions.net/images/atmosphere_alpha.jpg

You will have a planet in front of you with the ability to load your texture on and not only see from the outside the sky but also on the surface at sunset... sunrise... midday etc... also you will see haze and be able to modify that using the color picker provided...

Don't forget to include a way to limit the fps :)

(so it can be set slow so the app doesn't use much cpu)

Thats already been implemented... It uses only 1% cpu cycles... My framerate reflects my monitor's refresh rate... 100mhz or so...

I'd completely forgotten about haze.

Most excellent! This is really a major step up in both usability and helpfulness. Visualization is always the best aid. I can't wait to play with the first version, that's for sure....

It will require a chicken and a powered circle in the woods and a chant to the forest pixies however :P

I'm still a little fuzzy on what this actually is... is it some kind of texture-making program?

Well, that works out just fine, because we're having chicken tonight! **chuckles**

Malenfant, this is an atmospehre generator (at least, that's my primary interest in it) with a much improved visualization tool, to aid in making atmospheres that actually appear as they might be imagined by the maker.

Oh, so it allows you to visually define an atmosphere, then it generates the SSC with all the settings done in the way to generate the image? That's definitely useful! :)

Dr. Constantine,

It will eventually be a full blown solar system editor geared directly towards Celestia... In general I plan to start with an atmosphere guage since its the most popular and used and start towards the editor itself... It will be both GUI and editor based... similar to using an IDE compiler, it will have the ability to correct errors and auto complete known commands currently available in the Celestia Core... Thats the beginnings atleast... I might also include a basis for plugins generated using the Lua scripting language to allow the community to enhance its capabilities... So I wont have to do it :P

Yup, that's it! I've always had a heck of a time figuring out the values to put in for atmsophere coloration, and even with the tools out there the color field shown doesn't match what you see in the atmsophere of the final-generated planet. What Rass is doing will make this *so* much easier....

Rass...I still have your original solar system generator and texture packs with which I've generated at least two fairly sizable systems (I quite like playing God!). Is this a replacement or something completely different. Sorry for being dim...just trying to catch up!
regards...bh.

This will make that look like using dos compared to using windows...

Will it also create new systems as well as editing existing ones?

Ok heres a beta for testing:

http://celestialvisions.net/files/atmosphere3.0.0.zip

Heres a simple rundown on the controls...

A - Accelerate
Z - Decelerate/Backwards
Space - Stop
F1 - F12 - Speed
Home/Page Up - Rotate camera
Arrow Keys - Orient Camera
F1 - Speed inhibit based on distance.
Esc - Exit and save to atmosphere.txt located in same directory as exe...

Buttons will switch between sky settings.
The grey gradient is for setting brightness of color table....
Remember to Esc to save your settings into atmosphere.txt!
Also if you get stuck on the planet surface hit F3 and back out with Z... Ill have to implement a better stop on surface cue...

Let me know if there are problems...Remember this is a real basic model of the actual app... More features to come... Currently you cannot change the sun color or insert your planet texture but that will change...

Hey Ras,

Excellent app idea, I have used your web based one a few times. I downloaded the file but got errors finding a jpg and initialising a font. I can see the moon and atmosphere, and can move in and out with A&Z but all other functionality is missing and none of the buttons work. Is it supposed to be installed in a specific directory, do I need some dll that I might be missing? Looks pretty though  .

Also I need to know how many people are seeing the sun and how many are not including FULL system specs...

I tested on a GeForce 500 MX and it didnt respond with glPointParemeterARB was unsupported but the sun did not show up when in reality its shows just fine on my system... GeForce 5900 FX
