Tintin rocket

Post #1by lukr » 23.04.2005, 08:00

I can't get this add-on to work.

I installed the add-on under Celestia/extras/addons/Tintin

This folder contains:

1) readme file
2) Tintin.ssc
3) textures folder (with /medres/react and /medres/tintin
4) models folder (with tintin.3ds)

I can select and go to the model. I see a bright satellite orbit the moon, but when I try to get closer, celestia hangs. What am I doing wrong.

The downloaded file also contained DS_STORE files. Not sure what do with these...

Any help welcome, Luk

How long did you wait?

For some reason, it takes Celestia a long time to read it in, convert it to OpenGL format and load it into the graphics card. It takes more than a minute on my 500MHz P3 system.

I'm not sure why this is, since the model only contains 16 meshes and a total of about 100,000 vertices. When I loaded it into Anim8or, I noticed that has very tiny dimensions. I'm not sure why that would cause a slowdown, though.

You can ignore the DS files. The Zip archive was created on a Mac. They're not needed by other types of systems.

Thanks,

You're right! It finally came through. I clocked it at over 1 minute on a P4 3Ghz with 512 Ram and Radeon 9600.

Seems very odd for a realtively simple model like that to take that long to load.

Anyway, thanks again.

Hello Lukr, if you have installed the Cham's great moon base you can place the rocket with it just for fun: add an .ssc file like this:

Code: Select all

"Fusee Lunaire2" "Sol/Earth/Moon/Base Location"
{
   Class "spacecraft"
   Mesh    "tintin.3ds"
   Radius    0.04

   EllipticalOrbit {
        Period          27.321661
        SemiMajorAxis   1737.597 # 1737.53
        MeanLongitude   262.101
    }

    Orientation [ 90 0 1 0 ]

    RotationOffset 262.1
    Albedo        0.01
}

Hm, strange. It comes up within a few seconds on my system.

Weird. It still locks up my system, and I have a 2G Pentium4, with Invidia Graohics. Zilchola.

Any ideas?

I think you just have to be patient.

There's something strange with the model which causes Celestia to take several minutes to load it. It'd be nice if it's author could fix that...

Alternatively, you could take a look at Lukr's Addon titled "Explorers on the Moon," haddock_tintin_rocket.zip. It includes a model of the rocket, Tintin and Captain Haddock. It's larger but loads much more quickly.

Thanks. I shall do so. Yes, it would be nice if the author would de-glitch this one.
