More Messenger images of Earth

Post #1by LoneHiker » 19.03.2006, 04:03

http://cps.earth.northwestern.edu/MESSE ... close.html

At the time I originally posted a link to some Messenger images and video I was not aware of a couple of these closer views of North and South America (the 2nd and 3rd images). They are quite nice, and very useful if you want to modify your own Earth textures.

Those are really cool images...

Is it me though, or is there always a line of cloud that follows the western coastline of south america? You can see it really well in those images.

You can also see it on the normal cloudmap for Earth in Celestia, but since it rotates round the planet you get this obvious 'south america' shape rotating round the planet too... Maybe it's better if we just keep the cloudmap rotating at the same speed as the ground in Celestia...

No, it's not just you. That's a persistent phenomenon.

Yep, that's what I do. :)

OR, someone could make a cloudmap that is completely independent of Earth's geography, so one wouldn't see an outline of south america in the cloudmap.

Yes, but then it wouldn't be a realistic cloudmap, would it. That feature is there all the time it seems.
