The obvious reason seems to be that these pleasant young animals seem to dig and enjoy themselves a lot in mud and other (worse) "unclean" environment ...That's from here, I suppose the parabola takes it's origin.

Well, just between you and me Good Doctor, I laughed for about twenty
minutes after I saw the "Ferkel!" This method of social comment seemed
entirely appropriate (and extremely humorous) to this old geezer.
