Release: Blue Venus [v2]

Post #1by rthorvald » 04.12.2005, 10:37

Here is my
Updated Blue Venus
... now with bump and specular maps. The AddOn now contains
1024x1024 PNG Virtual Textures up to 8k, together with JPG medres and
lores files. I have also cleaned up the coastlines, re-textured the polar
caps, and re-worked the cloudmap to some extent. Overall image quality
is *much* better than before.

I decided not to publish the 8k spec and bump, nor the 4k clouds. But if
anyone wants them, let me know.

This is Venus as they imagined it in science fiction of the 40??s and 50??s
- the Golden Age SF. This is the place Mr. Smith went to see
:-)

The map is based on Maxim??s topographical maps. It is flooded to a very
high level, since i didn??t want the thousands of tiny islands that would
otherwise have saturated the oceans.

Here??s some screenshots:

Very nice! I set it up on my computer to view just only the medres textures, and even then it looks fantastic.

Unfortunately, I could only view it for a few minutes before I got the dreaded "warning: virtual memory is too low" message. Oh well. That's life. :)

Still, great textures. Much thanks! :)

Great work, one of the polar icecaps looks a lot like Antarctica.

It would still be nice if you could publish the 8k specular texture and bump maps as well as the 4k clouds, just for extra enhancement.

Well, i asked for an opinion on this from the forum: nobody bothered to
reply, so i did not include them. I am not going to re-package the Addon,
but if you want it personally, PM me and i??ll give you access to download it
from my own system.

Hey rthorvald,
This finaly got me to fire up my install of Celestia after more than a month of it being untouched. I really likr the textures, i did convert the bumpmap into a normal map and give it a bit more of a exagerated hight. But all in all a very nice add-on. It looks especialy beautiful with my set of Yantarni clouds.
Keep up the good work.

I might answer a PM or a post if its relevant to something.

Ah, never say never!!
Past texture releases, Hmm let me think about it

Thanks for your understanding.

Hm, it would be interesting to see a screenshot! I tinkered a *lot* with the bumpmap and height values, would be nice to see your take on it.
