New Features - Suggestions Wanted
There's now a page in the Celestia WikiBook for suggested new features. If there's something you'd like to see added to Celestia, you can record it there. No guarantee it will ever be implemented, of course. (This is really just a ruse to get people to contribute to the wikibook.)

Fridger,
By all means, you and Toti should keep coding! In fact, if it were up to me, I wouldn't let you waste your time reading this forum! I would have someone else collecting and clarifying/verifying bug reports before you'd even see them. We can't affort to waste your unique talents.
Now get back to coding!
Everyone else (who's not busy coding, or making textures or models, or writing documentation, or otherwise contributing), please add your suggestions for new features to the wikibook.

Yes Sir
back at work already...
Cheers,
Fridger
Sorry, but I just have to...
Would have been nice to see a great big "THANK YOU Toti," and maybe a big
"THANK YOU FRIDGER" prior to ordering these two marvelous contributors
back to work. Don't you think?
I'll go away now.

Bob,
I for one found Hank's "order" pretty charming.
No need for more...really.

I'm pretty sure that Fridger and Toti know how much I appreciate their efforts. That was implicit in what I said before. But I agree that we can't begin to thank them enough, so:
Fridger and Toti, THANK YOU. Please take another bow... and then get back to work!

Thank YOU Hank... I probably just stuck my nose in where it wasn't
needed, and I apologize if I misunderstood because I took your posts
out of context.
My best regards

Oh, don't worry about it. Anyway, I'm so giddy these days about the fact that finally some real progress is being made on Celestia that I'm hardly going to take offense at anything so inconsequential. Besides, I understood your good intentions and agree with your basic sentiment that Fridger and Toti deserve every bit of appreciation and encouragement we (the Celestia Community) can give them. And, incidentally, thank YOU for your contributions to Celestia as well.

ElChristou wrote:Hank, do you think the WikiBook is a better place for feature request than the forum? I mean there is a ton of feature request here... and... well... I'm wondering if repeating them in the Wiki is really usefull...
The wikibook is a collaborative document, rather than a jumble of discussion transcripts like the forum. The feature requests in the forum are scattered all over and are difficult to locate and integrate. In the wiki, the feature requests can easily be edited to add organization, clarification, and integration. A collection of feature requests in the wiki could more easily involve into a specification of features agreed upon for implementation, which might improve the odds of eventual implementation. The forum is good for conversation, but not very good for maintaining a collaborative specification. So yes, I think it would be useful to get the feature requests into the wiki.

I saw this topic, and wondered what kind of useful suggestions there would be. I didn't have high hopes.
Yeah, valuable suggestions there. Evidently whoever posted this has no idea of the philosophy of Celestia (or the existence of, say, VegaStrike), and is such a lazy pig that even if they had a .ssc generator that worked for them, they probably wouldn't get around to making any textures anyway.
Yay.

1. Someone make an editor that allows us to tweak Celestia more easily and make worlds of our own. I'm a real lazy pig and all the .ssc generators I've checked out so far don't do a real good job.

Ok, good reasons... Someone is in charge of the organization of the Wiki?

Chaos, You're looking at the wrong page. Follow the link in my original post. But also keep in mind it's just a start. And if you see anything that needs to be added, deleted, corrected, disputed, etc. just do it. That's the wiki way.

Not yet. Volunteers would be welcomed.

Toti wrote:Those are really good feature requests. Most don't look too difficult to implement.
Of course, those are just for starters. And I believe Fridger has a few ideas for new features that may be a bit more challenging...
But to amplify what I said previously, the hope would be to use the wikibook in a process to advance the status of feature requests from "suggested" (general idea) to "proposed" (detailed specification) to "approved" (accepted for inclusion). If we had a list of feature requests that were well-specified and pre-approved, it might encourge more developers to get involved.
