Can the Gimp open World Wind dds files?

Post #1by cartrite » 28.09.2005, 04:15

cartrite here,

I was trying to import some textures from World Wind into my VT Earth folders to add some close ups of areas of interest. And ran into a brick wall. I can't find a way to edit them. Enhance colors and such. I'm not sure if they will even work in Celestia.

Anyone out there know if the gimp can open a dds file used by NASA World Wind?
The files seem to have missing or changed header info. I can open dds files from my Blue Marble extras folder thats in Celestia . But I can't open any files from the cache folder in World Wind 1.3.2. The wierd thing is that an embedded viewer in Konqueror can draw those same files. Both thumbs ands full size. But it's only a viewer. ????????

Cartrite,

just to be in sync with you: can you load normal DXT formats (i.e. dds) with your Gimp, because that IS definitely possible with the GIMP addon. There is a recent version that you have to compile yourself if you have a very recent GIMP 2.2.8. I can look it up if you don't know which one I mean.

Hi Fridger,

Yeah I can open normal DXTs with the gimp. I have version 2.2.8 with a recent dds plugin. Cant open World Wind dxts though. I did find a thumb viewer so at least I can see what I doing. I also tried nvdxt to open them but that fails too. The reader converts them to a tga. Then nvdxt converts them to dxt1c. Then the gimp can open them but the file is trash. 3/4 of the texture comes out black.

When you use World Wind (Landsat1) it stores all the textures in a cache folder as you may already know. But it uses a different size texture and a totaly different way of naming files.

I read some threads were "wcomer" was explaining how to get World Wind to store the files right. So you could use them in Celestia. Something about the Tile size in degrees. I think he was talking about the 1.2 version of World Wind because the files mentioned in the thread all changed in the newer versions.

Anyhow I was going to try to put a lot of World Winds level 6 textures together, then scale it to fit Celestia as close up addons. But I can't open them. Oh Well.

Hi Again,

Remember that large black box in the screenshots I sent. I was wrong about it being the kde version. It was the windows version. That black space is the pop up that comes onto the screen when you want to grab an image. When I move it around it appears on the photo in a different location. It does it with all the windows versions ( CVS, 1.3.2, FT1 ). I think it may be because my memory gets maxed out.

In case anyone cares:

I found that if you use hex edit to edit the dds file and change the 0xA byte from 00 to 08 and the 0x17 byte from 00 to 20, the gimp can open the dds file.

Sorry,

The 0x17 byte should change from 00 to 02.
