life zone option

Post #1by Space Man Spiff » 10.01.2005, 08:41

I love this programme immensely but I little skill in dev. Is there anyone interested in adding an option to show life zones around stars or is that an impossibility being that Celestia is not a simulator?

Best regards,

I wouldnt think its impossible...The Lua scripting system should allow this....
I'm trying to teach the cavemen how to play scrabble, its uphill work. The only word they know is Uhh and they dont know how to spell it!

Life Zone Dev

Rassilon (or whoever else interested),

I hope that was an invite to help!

I am in the process of looking over the Lua scripting stuff you mentioned, but like I said, I have little skill in this area. So unless it proves to be idiot proof or written for Kindergarteners, is this something which you could pickup, if interested? I have read your posts and realise that you are doing a lot already, but I figured there would be no harm asking. :D

Again, my idea was to make a (togglable) option for what any pariticular star's LZ would be, based on its characteristics.

I am limited in skill but I can help where I can...

Maybe it could be done with cmod files like Selden's coordinate grinds were.

Well I would like to help as you have helped me in the past...I know that you have excellent math skills which suprises me that you cannot program...I any event I would but as I am not an expert in Lua yet there might be someone far more adept at completing this than I...but its a matter of who would....I however could when time allows have a poke at it....

Life Zone Idea Moved to Dev

Post #6by Space Man Spiff » 15.01.2005, 06:55

Thanks for the compliment Ras but I am afraid you are thinking of someone else, I've never posted before this. And since I am pretty sure the Admin made such an announcement because of my query, I'm moving things over to the Dev forum (no hard feelings Chris so delete away!).

Ah, would that be me? Spaceman Spiff is a popular character with Celestia fans! Dollan has him for an avatar. I don't mind if you stick with the monicker Space Man Spiff, it's not my right - copyright for Calvin and Hobbes belongs to United Artists Syndicate, not even Bill Watterson! - but there might be some more confusion between us in the future though. ;).

I could program, but only procedurally. My last big programs were in Turbo Pascal in the early '90's. OOP, classes and C++ is something new and strange and different to me. Scripting languages like lua should be easier, but somehow I always get interrupted before consolidating any understanding. :(.

Right, over to the Development Forum then!

Spiff.
