Question for Don

Post #41by Beowulf01 » 12.12.2004, 01:58

Id like to ask you what programs are you using to do the planet textures?
I see Alien Skins Xenoflex mentioned, it is a nice program, but at that price way out of my range, and i already went past the demo time limit. :x :x
I have taken a stab at planets, they look Nice but nowhere near as nice as yours.
I'm currently limited to Photoshop7 and Paint shop pro 9.

Waiting for this is almost like waiting for christmas when i was a kid :-)

The screenshots look very exiting... Expecially the asteroid belts; when i made my Ran system, i thought for a long time about making one, but didn?t dare - i was afraid to run out of memory. I hope this will run on my system...

One thought: why not come up with a naming scheme for the planets, instead of ABC...? It will be easier for us to think of them as places if they have names.

Beowulf01,
All my textures are based on real planetary photos for the most part. So all I use is Photoshop and the GIMP. I have never used Alien Skin so I have no idea how hat works or how the textures come out.

rthorvald,
I have been toying with the idea of moving over to actual names for the planets in the system for a while now. Until recently I couldn't figure out how or what I was going to name them. But I think I have come up with a naming scheme that will work. When I made the texture F's second moon, the orange colored one, I called it Avaris. It was named after the lost Egyptian city of Avaris that is near the Nile delta. I thought of using ancient Egyptian names of places and gods but I have changed my mind. After I build a list of the names I will take a few more screen shots and will officially divulge the names I come with.

Past texture releases, Hmm let me think about it

Thanks for your understanding.

Hey Everyone,
Another little snippet of info. I have come up with a naming scheme for the planets in the HD 28185 system. I will pass on more information on this naming plan latter.
Here is the picture of the first object to get one of these names. It is what you may call a super comet. What it is really is a large kuiper belt type object 700 KM in diameter that has been perturbed into a comet like orbit. So it outgases like a comet when it enters the inner solar system much like a comet does.
The interesting thing is that in attempt to try and fill the void that exists between the cometary body and the tail with atmosphere has in fact given the body an out-gassing appearance that is very cool. Here is look at Rogue Planetoid/Comet Illimani.

Hope you enjoy the peak. As always comments are welcome.

Very good comet with atmosphere. The name is also good. The images are also a good inspiration for people that want to add asteroid belts. Also the planets and moons images are very unique. Excellent work! :D 8)
Your system is interesting because have Earth-like and many other moons orbiting gas giants. The clouds and rings of Panthalassic world are very beautiful. :D 8)
I think that your system would be more interesting if it had a browndwarf or a small red star with one or more planets. Or you can add a big or small rogue planet. I reccomend you create a rogue planet with about a radius of 13000 Km (Bigger than Earth and smaller than Neptune), and this planet must be very very distant to it's star. Or add a pluto-sized planet. But without these things I mentioned your system is still excellent for me. :D 8)

PS: I'm doing a new system ( I didn't choose the name yet ), a binary star system, that have some interesting planets. And have a small asteroid belt.
One day we will swim in the subsurface ocean of Europa and take shower in ethane lakes of Titan.

kikinho,
The HD 28185 system add=on is based partially on fact. We know that there is a gas giant in orbit of the star HD28185 in the same position that Earth is in our system. The rest of the bodies are fictitious as far as we know.
Who know, maybe some of these worlds are there but we can't see them as of yet. As far as adding a red dwarf or a brown dwarf there is no evidence that any of those bodies exists in this system. If they did we would know about them for sure by now.

I really like that super-comet, though I don't really know what I'm actually looking at in terms of how you're creating it in Celestia...

The system looks very nifty, though the brown orbits are somewhat regular! Are you planning to add a randomised element to the eccentricities and inclinations so the orbits are arranged less like a disc and more like a torus around the star? Say, by setting the inclinations to random values between +/-20 degrees?

Evil Dr Ganymede,
Well the out gassing look is simply done by setting the atmosphere height to 25000 or so.
As for the orbits, I will probably shift a few of them but there are 400 bodies in the outer ring and I used what I believed is Bruckner's old Venus ring maker to generate them. Going through and changing certain parameters in mass like the names and were the ring is going to be located can be done with a simple replace option under WordPad. Trying to change some couple of hundred entries to random entries is going to be very time consuming. I am already a year and a half late with this add-on.
Now if someone wants to site at there computer and go through and change some of the parameters to give it a more random look and feel please come forward and I will send you a copy of the .ssc and then the volunteers can work on it. At this rate this is going to be the only way I can get that portion done. So anyone that reads this wants to help out on the add-on just give me a PM and I can send the .ssc to you.
