Whats a DDS & other questions

Post #1by wildone_106 » 07.10.2004, 20:08

I just discovered this amazing program yesterday and have been eager to get things set up correctly, I already went thru the manual and the "dummies" tutorial to add hi res textures for mars, which worked great..but now Im left rather overwhelmed with everything else..for example I wanted to install a hi res earth clouds and its in "dds" format..where do these go?

I also got an Earth level 4 (parts 1 & 2) and they are in in PNG format, theres no SSC & CTX with that? I could'nt see where to put these after following the dummies tutorial so I guess Im a bigger dummie!

Im using the latest version 1.3.2 on a 1.5gig althon 512mb ram with Gforce4 Tx card

Any help or further tutorial advice appreciated!

p.s. this reminds me alot of orbiter..too bad the 2 devs could'nt get together..them with the ship dynamics and this with the planetary systems..wow

Wildone,

So far as Celestia is concerned, DDS is just another image format that can be used as a surface texture image. If you haven't already, you might want to take a look at http://www.lepp.cornell.edu/~seb/celestia/textures.html and http://www.lepp.cornell.edu/~seb/celestia/addon-intro.html

When you install a VT, you need all of the lower numbered levels before a higher level will work. In other words, you need levels 0 through 3 before level 4. Usually the SSC for a VT is included with level 0, but sometimes you need to create it yourself :(

p.s. Unfortunately, Orbiter is "closed source" (only the author gets to see the code) and uses DirectX, so it only runs on Windows, while Celestia is open source and written using OpenGL, in order to be multi-platform compatible.

Ok thanks I did'nt realise about having to get the entire suite of textures and I'll try those links, I really appreciate the help!
Yea I know Orbiter and Celestia are completely different code wise, its a nice dream that one day someone will pull it ALL off though...! For now Im more than happy with this!

... But you don?t actually need to have the levels filled up. For example, you can have level 10 textures without having anything in levels 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 - as long as the directories themselves are present.
