Its not a 3ds, but a *.msh file...
I ll try to talk with the one that created that mesh and ask him if its possible to use it here...

Hello bh, I have found at this address 8O
http://www.tdp.nu/cgi-bin/plugread_r4.pl?Type=Import&sort_a=Author
a little toolset by Alexander Blass
Orbiter Mesh v1.2 25 KB
for exporting and importing Orbiters .msh file format from/to gmax and 3DSMax (there are a lot of converters, too),
related to the free Spaceflight Simulator Orbiter by Martin Schweiger. 8O
I've neither experience in 3d modelling, nor I have 3dsmax or gmax, and moreover don't know if this converter is well known and already tested or not, but I'm sure that some of the Celestia graphics gurus will check if this can help or not.
I agree with ElPelado on Orbiter models quality, and I think that if there would be a models and textures free interchange between Orbiter and Celestia, this would be positive for both communities, do you agree? :P
By and thank you

Andrea :D

ANDREA...yes I do agree..these models are superb! I was in touch a while ago with Don Amy(?) from the Orbiter community who had converted one of his shuttle models to 3ds format and very good it was too. But I've heard nothing from him since. This was about a year ago.

I will look into the mesh converter though I've little time for modelling at the moment...although this may get me going again...I'm more than a little obsessed with this spacecraft!

I certainly wont feel bad about these new shuttle models as the standard is far greater than I could achieve!

Celestia really deserves these...

I already have that tool for converting 3ds to msh and the other way. And I have put a thread in the Orbiter forum to try to contact the person who made the meshes so I can ask for his permission to use them in Celestia...

Also I can add the launch pad with a shuttle ready to launch in KSC...

ElPelado...great. I think there may be a problem getting the textures to fit into Celestia...it would be well worth a try however! I'm sure Orions ISS was a direct conversion from Orbiter to Celestia....so it can be done..to be continued...

Yes, seems to me that the authors was David Hopkins, they can be found on Avsim, IIRC.
Other thing, on the other side: El Pelado, do you saw on Orbiter Hangar some of great Jestr's Moons are translated to .msh fort Orbiter?Jeam

I didnt understand this:
El Pelado, do you saw on Orbiter Hangar some of great Jestr's Moons are translated to .msh fort Orbiter?

Are you saying that they were converted to msh or are yo uasking if they were converted?
And who is Jestr, he is from Celestia or from Orbiter?

Hi, Elpelado,
ElPelado wrote:I am sorry to say that it wont be possible to do this(use orbiter shuttle meshes here)...
Orion Nebula have converted .msh to .3ds. See http://jeam.tag.free.fr/CELESTIAhtml/CelestiaAddons-Spacecrafts-ISS1.htm and following page. (there are some links to download these stuff)
Are you saying that they were converted to msh or are yo uasking if they were converted? And who is Jestr, he is from Celestia or from Orbiter?

http://www.orbithangar.com/searchresults.cfm?Catagory=default&OrbVer=031217&Submit=Get+Results&search=Jim Williams have converted some of Jestr's Celestia models and textures for Orbiter. Jestr is a great creator and adaptator of lot of models in Celestia. Some examples: http://jeam.tag.free.fr/CELESTIAhtml/CelestiaAddons-SystemeSolaire3.htm or http://jeam.tag.free.fr/CELESTIAhtml/CelestiaAddons-SF-StarTrek2.htm See the Celestia Motherlode author page on http://celestiamotherlode.net/ or http://www.geocities.com/jestrjestr/Jeam

ElPelado,

"Jestr" often posts here on the Celestia forum and has created or translated many 3D models for use with Celestia. He recently repaired NASA's gigantic model of the Hubble. See the previous page in this very thread. Quite a few of his models are on http://celestiamotherlode.net

I don't think Jestr has translated any Orbiter models, though. But he can comment on that himself :)

As Jeam wrote, "Orion Nebula" translated several Oribiter models, but he doesn't seem to be active in the Celestia community any more.

Andrea,I will try to change the tube of Hubble to fit the sketches above, what do you think you should see,it looks like just the secondary mirror (black?)halfway down the tube(black?) with a hole in the middle (how big a hole?),should it have a glass screen to stop anything other than light getting in?
El Pelado-do you have a link to the msh file for the shuttle model(s?)you want converted,I think I can get the Max script mentioned above working in my version of 3DSMax,but I cant seem to find the right models-I havent tried making anything for Orbiter yet,but I see some of my creations have been used there,
All the best Jestr

Jestr,

Some diagrams of the Hubble's optical assembly are on page 5-21 of the document http://pao.gsfc.nasa.gov/gsfc/newsroom/pkits/05final.pdf
(which also has the diagram that Andrea provided above)

Unfortunately, they're crude line drawings and are hard to interpret if you aren't familiar with how Cassegrain telescopes are designed.

I'll see if I can find something a little better...

Jestr....if you can get some help from the Orbiter guys I would like to have a go at any gaps that may appear to get these models into Celestia....TERRIER and I are working on Apollo right now, and this may take some time...also some Gemini models!...Watch this space!

Jestr,

Some pictures and dimensions of the optics are provided on the Web page http://hubblesite.org/sci.d.tech/nuts_.and._bolts/optics/optics2.shtml

I haven't found anything yet that specifies the size of the central perforation of the primary mirror.

You asked
should it have a glass screen to stop anything other than light getting in?

No. The mirror optics are directly exposed to the vacuum of space. You do not want anything between them and the stars because it would distort the images.

I agree with Selden, many information/phisical data on HST are missing or very hard to be found, so some things should be based on fantasy more than on true data.
Anyhow, the actual results are truly amazing, so probably it's not so important to make many additions.
Hope this can help.
To all of you, Jestr, bh, Terrier and Selden, my most sincere thank you for your help and realization, very appreciated.

On Orbiter addon forum, for some moons i've spoke about:

Aren't they from Jester's Celestia moons...the textures? For 'the Outer Planets' we'd need to give him some credit too if so.

Some of the textures are. I'm going to update the docs credits section right now.

Shuttle Fleet:I don't have a look at Orbiter regularly, but there are some links to Shuttles on Orbithangar, different authors, different texture packs updates:http://www.orbithangar.com/search.cfm Examples: Atlantis v35http://www.orbithangar.com/download.cfm?ID=399Endeavourv36Ehttp://www.orbithangar.com/download.cfm?ID=657

When I said it wont be possible, I didnt mean that its impossible to convert msh to 3ds, I have the script and I have already converted many times. The only problem is that the creator of the Shuttle Meshes used in teh addon of the "Shuttle Fleet"(that includes the 6 shuttles: Atlantis, Challenger, Columbia, Enterprise, Endeavour and Discovery) didnt give me permission to use his models. And I dont think we should use them if he doesnt want...
