Experience on "best" moon texture

I recently upgraded to a NVidia fx-5200. (My first video card ever, spurred by excitement over Celestia.) So I've been experimenting with the various moon textures.

I like the color of Laika's 16K moon texture but seems "too big" for my setup.
The best for me seems to be 16K VT from Praesepe. It works great but I don't like the greenish coloring. (Is there some magic program out there that would change the color of all the images of a VT in batch mode?) I wanted to try the VT textures from Jon Van Vliet but I've tried downloading twice (on a dial-up) and have had "corrupt compression" errors each time. (Like in a previous post I saw.)

Can anyone help direct me to other options based on your experience? Thanks.

Did you try using 7-zip to extract them? It seems John has used a non-standard zip for his files, leading to considerable confusion :-(

Hi,
I agree, I recently DL'd the 16K VT from Praesepe. It's great but seems a little too greenish for my own taste; it'd be nice to see a greyscale version. I'm thinking the filesizes would be smaller as well, unless DDS-VT are always RGB...?

After working a little more with the available moon textures maybe Laika's 16K moon texture works best for me. (Even better than the VTs.) Even though it takes time to load it seems to be smoother while orbiting. The VTs seem to be very jerky on my set-up always loading/unloading and cause a jerky movement while orbiting or moving the "camera". I now have the Laika moon setup as an extra "Alternate view" which avoids a lot of the "initial loading time" problems for me.

So my hires moon is an 8k with bumpmap (I think I got it from the motherload but can't remember which it is...but it's great!) and I can load the "Laika" for close-ups. That's the best setup I've found so far for my little fx5200. :)

I'm obsessed for now...I'm sure it will wear off.:)

Yes, I like the Laika map too. I just DL'd it this AM.

Hey bh, are you saying that Photoshop has the ability to modify all the textures for a group of VT images automatically? (I'm not a current owner of the program and am curious.) BTW, are you fimiliar with GIMP? Does anyone know if it has this ability? Thanks.

Ah...I'm not using the vt...may have a try though. I think you may be able to batch process the vt tiles however...I know ImageReady can do this.

I run Photoshop 7 and yes you can process multipule images using the batch option. You would be able to desaturate or change the colors used in your VT's in one shot. Takes some learning tho, i warn ya.

Peace.
