I have been toying with a new bumpmap for the Moon for a while is secret. Everything else I found just didn't do it justice or turned some craters into hills and raised the Tyco impact scares into hills as well. My answer was to take a modified texture of the moon and do some color inverting and blending. Then I started to paint in the crater bottoms by hand in Photoshop. I even took out the areas that turned out raised near Tyco. All in all it is a good first attempt but is far from perfect. The reason I am posting it here is because I am using Praesepe's 16k Moon texture in the pictures so I felt it should go in here rather than start a new tread. If everyone likes the look of this bumpmap I can make it available for download. Here are two shots.

In Don's top moon image one can see a nasty left-over artifact that is of course not related to Don's bump map: Lots of stripes! In my textures, I was able to easily get rid of them by means of a neat filter that GIMP offers (but Photoshop does'nt), called 'destripe'.

Whoooooooa! Excellent work Don, this bumpmap is far better than my attempt to create a decent one.. congratulations, it looks very very real.. what resolution does it have? I'd love to see it on my Celestia! :)

Another 16k moon - seeking hosting (or pointers to free host

Post #44by Darryl Roy » 09.01.2004, 01:48

As much as I (now more than ever) admired the work of Praesepe on his 16k Moon, I wasn't happy with its coloration and contrast, especially when viewed at low altitudes in Orbiter (my primary space simulator). So I went back to the Clementine source materials and brewed up my own
over the past week, this time (I think) with the correct mapping of Clementine color filters to RGB channels.

I've released it for Orbiter, and in gratitude for the many splendid
borrowings of the Orbiter community from Celestia, have also prepared a .dds texture using the bigDDS tool suggested by Don. However, I don't currently have a means of distributing a 59 MB .zipped file to the Celestia
community. Can anyone either suggest a free file-hosting service or
offer hosting for this beast? I'm competent with FTP, and can be directly
contacted at sombrehombre@hotmail.com

Oh, the screenshots:

Additional screenshots (with various spacecraft in the foreground) but
equivalent in resolution and color to the Celestia screenshots, are
available at the Orbiter download library:

Praesepe / Don,

Can we get an update on the status of your Moon bumps? I've been anxiously awaiting them since this thread went silent back in Dec.

Seb,

Theres already some very good 16k moon textures on the Montherlode site...

As a Celetsia development note; It would be useful for texture brightness to change when zooming out as to be show the correct brightness of the object. Moon textures need to be brighten up when viewing from a distance, as to look more real.
