Spitsbergen: First Snow is back, Evening Shine...

Hi all,

after coming across this WEB camera monitoring a very
cold place that some of us have visited before, I could not resist:

Celestia:

Reality NOW (updated every 30 minutes):

If you happen to be interested in this sort of thing, I recommend
visiting this Longyearbyen URL several times over the day!
It's absolutely worth it. The light and the weather conditions are changing so amazingly...

A short while ago it was all dark 24h a "day"...

Sometimes, when the image is updated (every 30 minutes), you can see a car
or people walking along the "street"... and I start asking myself what they are doing
after working hours;-)

Excellent post Fridger.
So if we visit here regularly we will see an ever changing picture, and a chance to see some spectacular 'almost live' views of Aurora-Borealis?

Yes it would be lovely to see similar views from Spitzbergen in Celestia :wink:

Could it be done as an alternate texture like the 'cloud shadows' that are currently available?

A: Normally Polar Bears are not to be found in the centre of
Longyearbyen, but occationally they get to the vicinity of the
city. This means one should never leave the centre of Longyearbyen
without firearms.

Q: Which weather can one expect on Spitsbergen in the summer?

A: The average temperature on Spitsbergen in the summer is
5?C. Normally there is hardly any precipitation, but cold wind, fog
and a cloud ceiling.

Q: Which weather can one expect on Spitsbergen in the winter?

A: The average temperature on Spitsbergen in the winter is -10?C. The
weather conditions alter rapidly, so temperatures can change from
above 0?C till -30?C. Days with low temperatures are normally bright
and clear. Cold wind is common regardless of temperature. March is the coldest month!

Hi all,

I am amazed: this thread of mine has now been visited
more than 1200 times, despite the fact that I am
about the "sole entertainer" here :roll:

I conclude that many of you must be similarly fascinated
like me, to watch the changing scenery so high up north
when spring is trying to take over...
