Hi to all,

I opened a thread in Orbiter forum about this subject :

http://orbit.m6.net/v2/read.asp?id=15472

And I learned that the present version of Orbiter doesn't display shadows. Next one would do it.

After I l met Jeam on french orbiter forum, I used Celestia (as newbie, after 3 yrs away), with a point of view from Earth eyeball adjusted :

This is the screenshot. The 3 shadows event was 40min earlier.
(Is it a problem of light speed? I believe that I didn't meet it with Starry Night Pro 4)

Image

and the video is here :

http://perso.wanadoo.fr/jalp83/Orbiter/J300.rmvb

I find the rendition of Jupiter's disk superb, witn fine darkening around towards edge.
But I found some strange edge effects on Io and Ganymede disks when before the planet. Perhaps an effect when just switching betwseen textured and not textured display for small objects?

And I remained very surprised of rendition of Io, very bright and Ganymede very dark, as well Callisto and Europa too dark also, when trying to compare with what I can see with my 15" dobs and Hubble pictures.

When increasing Io size, it also becomes too much dark.
I'm not sure that albedo differences between Jupiter and galilean moons are so important.

Sure that this problem of rendition for small objects with or without apparent diameter, with or without texture file is not easy to solve!
Just give a look to how non galilean moons appear!

.

PS : Rad Video Tools freeware is the perfect tool for analysis image per image of gif videos.

Beg your pardon? the remarquable video by Simfan is a Celestia one. Basic Package, I guess... So, Your nice simple screenshot shows a great add-on texture of Jupi (I've the same one and the ring too in my Install :-) ), but not the Shadows passing as this video did, as more realistic way that it was observed by engines!...
Nice, isn't it? Jeam

Hi :)

the remarquable video by Simfan

Thxs. It's far easier to make videos in Celestia (OpenGL ?) than in Orbiter!

is a Celestia one. Basic Package, I guess

Yes, it is

As soon I'll come back to my home with ADSL, I'll dnl some addons to check above moons rendition problems.

Which one would be the best for Jupiter?

Bravo SimFan. You're video is indeed remarkable. It is also educational in that it explains to me why my Celestia's view of the shadows appeared wrong to me and now I see where I was not able to define between a shadow and a moon with a very low albedo.

Good job.

Jovian eclipses

Post #31by HS » 26.04.2004, 15:15

Here is a .cel file that I created a short time ago.

{
select { object "Sol/Jupiter/Io" }
follow {}
#goto { time 25 distance 1917 }
timerate { rate 100.0 }
set { name "FOV" value 35.0 }
time { jd 2450763.63200 }
gotolonglat { time 15 distance 9 longitude -165.14389 latitude -3.22164 }
}

It shows Jupiter being eclipsed by Callisto, Ganymede, and Io. As well, it shows Ganymede's shadow being cast upon Io.

The event occurred on November 10, 1997.

I use this file as my start cel and hit Shift-1 (or !) to return to the present.

Hope you enjoy this .cel.

Some time ago I made a special gallery with Celestia.

There is a special shot with 3 shadows on jupiter.
See it here:

Nice!
How do you get the gallery on shatters.net?
I couldn't find a register link or button.

Hello Calculus, Thanks, I had lost your adress, so do not add your great album in my ' Contributors repertory' page. I've corrected this. Jeam
