Odd FPS Drop with Comet Tails

I was running Fraps today along with Celestia. I find it produces a more current FPS reading than Celestia's built in one. In anycase I noticed a strange drop in frame rate when comet tails are enabled, even if no comets were visible.

I had all rendering turned off (stars, galaxyies, etc) except planets. I also has the Magnitude Limit turned all the way down, so nothing except earth was visible. Toggling "Comet Tails" caused the framerate to drop from 42p FPS to 11 FPS. Running 1600x1200 on a 9800 with a full suite of 32k textures.

I'm confused as to what causes such a large framerate drop, particularly since no comets were visible.

This is proving to be unrepeatable, so I'm not sure what was going on.

Upon a few retries I am seeing drops from 43 FPS to 34 FPS, which seems more reasonable.

One thing I'm starting to think about is that Celestia may have some issues when it comes to the management of large data sets. My Celestia folder is a few gigs right now, and think it may be related to some of the odd things I've encountered. I will keep posted on with anything that proves more repeatable.

Yes, by all means let us know if you can find a set of repeatable steps.
