AMSAT models

Post #1by JessPKC » 03.02.2004, 05:55

I'm working on some of the AMSAT satellites
I've only finished AMSAT Oscar 7 and I was just wondering
if anyone was even interested in them, its a bad picture but...

Image

It looks a bit different than that now but not much.

I made it from the few pictures and art of the satellites I could find.

Its the oldest satellite still in operation!

If anyone wants these or more... and could possibly help put them into
the program as an add on it be great

I admit its simple, but the AMSATS especially these early ones just aren't
that fancy.

I just found some good photos of AO7 so I'll be putting in its finer details
including an actuall photo of its solar panels

Yay.

Your latest model of AO7 looks pretty good.

I wouldn't mind a few more new satellite models orbiting the Earth, and certainly a model of the oldest satellite still in operation.

Is there an SSC for it?
Where and when will the model be available?

Try as I might, I can't seem to figure out how to make a proper SSC
the things it wants and the data I have I cant tell how to make heads
or tails out of it.

I've tried to follow guides, but I dont have data that it wants but I have
lots of other data that I don't know what to do with.

I think I should try to make some other satellites that way I wont be
totally useless being I dont know how to make the SSC files proper.

Jess,

Most satellite orbits are described using TLEs (Two Line Elements).

Grant Hutchison wrote an Excel spreadsheet that will convert from TLEs to SSC parameters. It's available at http://www.lns.cornell.edu/~seb/celestia/hutchison/spreadsheets.html

His spreadsheets work with OpenOffice, too, which is free for downloading from http://www.openoffice.org/

I've just had a look on the CelesTrak website at the current NORAD 2-line elements, and have come up with this;

Code: Select all

AO-7
1 07530U 74089B   04036.95784790 -.00000029  00000-0  10000-3 0  2703
2 07530 101.7054  85.6605 0012465 119.2153 241.0168 12.53568440337345

from which, using Grants very handy 'tle spreadsheet', I get the following result;

Code: Select all

"1974-089B" "Sol/Earth" {
  Class "spacecraft"
  # Mesh
  Radius  0.005

  EllipticalOrbit {
    Epoch  2453041.45784790
    Period  0.07977227
    SemiMajorAxis  7827.733
    Eccentricity  0.0012465
    Inclination  101.7054
    AscendingNode  85.6605
    ArgOfPericenter  119.2153
   MeanAnomaly  241.0168
  }
  Obliquity  101.7054
  EquatorAscendingNode  85.6605
  RotationOffset  43.6051
  # Orientation  [  ]
}

The name "1974-089B" is the satellites official international designation, you can call it what you want! The radius will need changing to it's correct size, and obviously the mesh file name will need to be inserted.

Hope this helps,
TERRIER

I'll package it up and upload it for people to download.

Jess,

There are about a half-dozen things that would cause a surface texture to work in a 3D modelling program but not in Celestia. Using an unsupported image file type (use jpg, png or dds) and dimensions that are not a power of two are the most common.

Please take a look at http://www.lns.cornell.edu/~seb/celestia/addon-intro.html#6 for a description of some of the others.

The texture didn't load because it wasn't a power of two.
I didn't know that was something that needed to be before it would work.

Regardless, it works now and I offer to the Celestia community, my first
add-on.

Jess,

When you download the ao7.zip package from the previously-defined link, you don't get a 3ds model included. There exists within the zip file, only an ao7.ssc, an ao7.txt file, and a panel.jpg file. We're we're wondering if you had the 3ds model also? :wink:

Thanks, Bob
