Opengl and Nvidia

Post #1by Press2meco » 20.11.2003, 09:25

Wondering if anyone out there could provide me with a bit of insight into this problem. I'm currently running with and Nvidia GeForce Ti4200 card and I can get celestia and anything else running Opengl to run fine, however, if I install any of their new drivers, going back to at least 44.03, I lose the ability to run anything in Opengl. However, if i uninstall any new drivers and revert back to the defaults, looks to 29.42 release from the restore disk, opengl runs fine again. Just curious if anyone could help me out so that I can run the new drivers AND opengl, or am I stuck running old drivers.
Some system info if that helps: pentium 4, 2.53 Mhz
512K cache 512 MB DDR
Western Digital 80 GB 7200 Harddrive

Well your in luck, I am a computer tech.
1. What version of Window are you using?
2. After installing the drivers did you install DirectX?

We had a small run of people at our shop having problems with NVidia cards lately when they tried to play the game Halo. Although Halo is a Direct X game they had installed the drivers and Direct X out of order. So always install Direct X first and then install the NVidia drivers. There seems to be some compoments in the drivers that get overwritten when you install out of order. Your card is more than capable of running Celestia. Also make sure you are getting your NVidia drivers from there website and not your computers manufacturers site. Computer OEMs are always slow to update to the newest drivers unlike the video card manufacturers. There does seem to be an ocasional hicup with NVidia's drivers and some systems running Windows 98/98SE/ME on systems from HP, Compaq, and Gateway. WE still have to figure out why we have trouble with some of these systems and not others. I hope this helps some but it is realy hard to know whats going on with the limited info you gave.

I'm currently using windows xp home edition and no, I didn't install directx after installing the drivers. The computer I'm using is actually about a year old, but I've had this problem ever since I first bought it. The brand of computes is a VPR Matrix that was sold thought Best Buy for sometime. Actually has been a extremely stable and trouble free unit, except for this one small problem.
Inital drivers work fine, but any upgrade I install, I subsequently lose the ability to run opengl.
Directx is all ready installed, since I've had this unit for sometime. Basically all I do is install drivers and leave it at that.
If there's any other info I could provide that would help, just let me know.

First of all I'd say download and install the latest DirectX9.0b
From here  http://download.microsoft.com/download/c/9/c/c9c8a1d4-7690-4c98-baf3-0c67e7f3751f/dx90update_redist.exe

Then download and install the latest Nvidia Detonator Drivers v52.16
From here  http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_52.16

Then if you still have a problem I will be surprised.

Hope all goes well.
