This addon now has the ability to write stars.dat and hdnames.dat files. Sql commands can be run from Lua scripts.
There are a few celx scripts provided to demonstrate.
Here is the changelog.

Hello,
Before I go installing this thing, how is it used, and do I need the MH add-on to use it?

Christoria,
This is the MH add-on.
All you need to do is download the above file. and install it the same directory as Celestia (1.3.1pre11 preferably, but it will work with others).
It is self installing and has an uninstaller, It does not overwrite or modify any celesita files. Uninstall any old versions of MH first.
This document explains what it is and how to use it. (the updated version of this document is included in the installer)

Hello,
I installed it and I'll keep it. Thank you for doing this for everyone to use. One question: Why does it try to connect to the Internet every time I start it up?

I don't know.
This has come up before, I thought I had fixed it by putting the skip-networking option in the my.ini file. I didn't test it as I am online all the time.
The mysql server or client is doing something at startup, probably as simple as looking up 'localhost'.
Thanks for letting me know about this, I will look in to it.

Just an excuse to bump it to the top of the list.

Is it the installer freezing or the application? Please provide me with as much information as you can. Including your system specs and exactly what you did.

It is not any trouble helping, I'm interested as to why it doesnt work.
Can you show me a screenshot of the point at which it freezes? also have a look in the dbdata directory in celestia for any *.err files and show me the contents of those.
After you click 'yes' you should see the GNU license page, do you get that far? If not it could be corrupt, you could try downloading it again.
If you get further than that, the installer describes what it is doing at each stage, read what it says carefully and tell me what stage it gets up to.
The installer should bring up a command console when it converts the stars.dat into a database, this takes a few minutes, and might take longer on a system with that much ram. You may just need to wait a while.

marc:
There exists on Pascal's website two star.dat files that increase the number of stars Celestia displays from about 100,000, to over 2 million. Unfortunately, those dat files cannot be read by 1.4.0, and have to be redone somehow. Pascal is busy and cannot get to them for a while. Will your add-on convert an existing star.dat file into a format 1.4.0 will recognize? If so, does the add-on explain how to do it?
Thanks
Frank
