Oh yes very nice Jens.
The colours look nice and subtle, I like it very much.

Looking forward to an 8k version

Here is another version of a coloured moon to compare with...

http://www.earth.nwu.edu/people/robinso ... color.html

The above moon does have a grid though.
If you look around his site there's even data to make a 16k moon, and a ready made 8k half of mercury.

This was the source of color information for my map. But this map covers not the complete surface and some 'lowres' parts are in it and stripes are still a problem.
8k half of mercury... You mean this shaded relief map.

link to high res moon data.

You can find many stripes and lowres parts in this map.

Dear Jim:

The colors on your 2k are good. I too look forward to the 8k dds texture. Also, when you post it, could you also post either a normal map or bump map to use with the texture? I have lost track of what best to use.

Thanks

Frank

Hi Frank and Paul,

I try to upload the new 8k Moon this weekend. You will find it on my website. Frank, sorry my new moon normal map is not ready and I can't say when it will be done. At the moment I don't use a bump/normal map for Moon.

Hey Paul, what's the problem?
Install Celestia 1.3.1.9 and have fun with this virtual texture. On my sytem the virtual textures loads faster than a 2k JPG and the best is you don't need no more lores and medres textures.

No, I have only a 56k modem. But you can download the 8k jpg and produce with 'Devil' or 'Nvdxt' a dds.

Well its all converted great.
and looks much better in its colouring than your first version

its a pitty Don Edwards is having a break at the moment
as I would have said you should ask him to host this texture on his site
and ask him to make a nice looking moon central to go with it.

I can convert them to 8k, 4k, and 2k dds files.
But I dont have the space to hold them :(

Jens...I've just desaturated your 8k moon texture, and while it's fine for some , I like to see some colour. I've not yet tried any of the virtual textures yet...I'm a bit wary as I'm still using 1.3.0. I've actually been toying with going back to ver 1.2.4. for stability! I have been drinking though!

Regards ESbh.

Recently, I was going thru a bunch of stuff that had been hanging around the house since i was a kid (YES, THAT WAS PRE MTV, SHOWTIME, HBO :D ) and came across some pictures that my father brought back from when he was in the airforce and was on the C130 that transported the apollo 12 and 14 crews back to houston.

These are never released photos of the moon taken from the orbiters. I am curious if anyone would like them scanned and posted somewhere for use as bumpmaps etc.
Remember the immortal words of Socrates, "I just drank WHAT?"
