Different Resolution Pictures

I know that Celestia supports having different resoluction pictures. My question is this..

I was recently looking at an 8k Mars with Normal mapping.. I wanted to switch to a 4k texture but it just be the same texture.

To get the different image resolutions to work must the images must be:
A. the same name
B. in the low, med, high folders respectively
C. each resolution noted seperately in the .ssc?

hello Phule.

At the m oment there are two ways to use alternate textures in Celestia.
the one you are after works like this....

If you have two or three diferent sizes of the same texture,
EG: like Don Edwards Earth texture, say Earth4k.dds, Earth8k.dds, and Earth16k.dds files.

Place each texture in each of the texture folders,
Earth4k in lores folder , Earth8k in medres folder, and Earth16k in hires folder.

Then rename each file to the same name, say Earth.dds

then edit your solarsys.ssc and set the Earth texture to Earth.dds

now you can run Celestia and change between them with "R" / "shift R"

So, as for your questions.

A: yes
B: yes
C: no

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also Celestia now recognises wild cards too. (since 1.3.0)
so you could have Earth.dds in you medres folder, and Earth.png in your hires folder.

Then edit your Solarsys.ssc and set the Earth texture to Earth.*
