In addition to the problems found by john71, I had found some more problems.

I also confirmed john71's missing moon texture problem.

Maybe this is my mistake. I'll try to commit a fix today on Github.

I have to clarify that there ARE good textures and good ssc files in the add-on folder, but they are not working correctly anymore. It seems they are not processed by Celestia.

  • For Ceres we have an old bug report https://github.com/CelestiaProject/Celestia/issues/242.
  • Pluto is not a independent file, but a part of Pluto-Charon system, so we have a barycenter in an ssc file, but barycenter names are not shown.
  • Some object are duplicated because as I suspect you extracted new data over old files, so one of them is an asteroid and another one is a dwarf planet. With clean data everything is ok. Try with clean data. It also might be my mistake as just copy data to temporary directory. At least with clean installation everything is okay.
  • Also no issues with Pandora.

Okay, basically it sounds like the full archives should re-uploaded.

Please provide such addon directory with all required files.

I can't find duplicates of dwarf planets in SSC files, but they appear in yesterday’s clean full version.

Added texture and oblateness to Ceres. Moved the "dwarfplanets.ssc" from the "extras-standard" to "data". Without Dawn spacecraft, the trajectory of Ceres isn't needed.

It's nice to know that the developers will really try their best and go to great lengths at the soonest possible time to fix any mistakes that the members found in Celestia, wither it's an snapshot or the final product. Hence, why it's important for us to contribute to the development of Celestia by finding and pointing out any mistakes, bugs or other problems that current snapshot is having. This community is really a good one indeed, and it makes me believe that together, we can make Celestia regain its place among current space simulators once and for all

Like have 1.7.0 supported in Wine once 1.7.0 is fully released.

That brings up an awkward question:

How do we modify the texture files in Celestia 1.7.0 so that
1) The textures are high-resolution
2) Not high-resolution to the point where Celestia Origin becomes obsolete

I also recommend that after 1.7.0 is released, that Celestia Origin may become an official add-on to Celestia, similar to how Space Engine has a high-resolution expansion pack.

Something like this is planned but before the release 1.7.0. Celestia Origin v.10 may be the last on 1.6.1 (or 1.6.2? I don’t know).

It seems that the problem is with the ctx virtual textures, on moons and on stars.

Switching on and off virtual ctx cloud textures in the Options menu distorts the surface textures under them.

Also instead of the virtual ctx textures moons and stars show other, unrelated textures on their surface, like a star or moon covered with the texture of an orbiting spacecraft.

Narrowing the problem is good, will investigate it this weekend.

Simple "dummy" planet with ctx cloud textures ON (distorted texture!):

image2 ctx clouds on.jpg

Ctx cloud textures OFF (real surface texture!):

image1 ctx clouds off.jpg

Ctx and normal cloud textures ON side by side:

ctx clouds on.jpg

Ctx and normal cloud textures OFF:

ctx clouds off.jpg

It seems that the ctx cloud textures do not work, but they "imitate" the surface features under them by distorting the surface texture.

We have merged a fix for virtual textures this morning. I'll compile a binary this evening for tests.

I think john71's antivirus is treating the Celestia how AVG (antivirus that is a virus) treats MS Paint from Windows NT 3.1, treating it as a virus ridden file despite being clean. A good way of telling if a file or application is infected is see if an actual antivirus (like Symantec) tells you shortly after downloading said file.
