Variable Stars in the Hipparcos Catalog

Post #1by Lafuente_Astronomy » 11.06.2019, 02:13

Well, in trying to add any variable stars into LukeCEL's starnames.dat file, which is incomplete and missing a few such variable stars, I fell into a slump.

In order to quicken my search, I tried finding lists and catalogs of all Variable Stars in the Hipparcos Catalog. According to the website of the Hipparcos Mission: https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/hipparcos/variable-stars , there are around 11597 (possible) variable stars listed in the catalog. But trying to find that list in the web, and I've come up with nothing. If anyone has a file detailing all the variable stars in the Hipparcos Catalog, please send the link here.

Thank you in advance.

The best I know how to do is doing a SIMBAD criteria search for

Code: Select all

cat = 'HIP' & cat = 'V*'

I have attached an .xlsx file with the results of this search but there are only 6,948 entries.

Well, that probably explains why several members are missing. Perhaps Simbad has to improve their Variable Star catalogs due to some new members. But thanks for that. I'll see if I can use it

The GitHub repository's starnames.dat should already have all variable star designations in the Hipparcos and Tycho catalogs.
