Massimo,

this texture is really awesome ! This may be your best one yet ! It's really perfect ! 8O

I suggest that you make another one, with more details on the base textures (a bit more contrasted), add lots of small and tiny cracks,
with stronger bumps on the normal map, and publish a 8k version.

This last texture is stunning !

EDIT : Massimo, for your preview pictures on the forum, I strongly suggest that you remove all the useless labels, and hide the HUD. The picture would be more interesting to look at.

The 8k version of the previous map is here

@Martin: feel free to host this map on your server, if you like it; I don't know how many time the shared server will be available.

Wow Massimo !

That texture is very well done.

However, I think I prefer the previous version (4k), because the details on the 8k version is making the moon to look too much "computerized" in some way.

The software you're using has a LOT of potential. You should continue to work with it. This is a precious tool for Celestia !
What is the name of that software again ? What is its web site ?

Apart the scratches' channels, all the remains cracks and craters have been handmade with Hexagon. I no longer will work on these stuffs neither in 8k mode (no enough spare time) nor manually on bumps; still I have the ice flows and cracks impressed on my retina and I see them everywhere, on the floor, walls, roof, doors, dishes and finally also on my face at mirror (to be not confused with the natural roughness, because even my face looks cyanish). Nonetheless, lots of ice flows can be smudged off through a 3D paint program or through the 3D paint option of a good 3D modeler. The 4k texture map can replace the 8k one because the big scratches are in the same position; the others will be bumped without color. The link to the Darktree procedural shader program is on the first page; it is no longer developed, now they seems to work to achieve procedural 3D paint.

EDIT LATER:
my fault, the link was on the first page of another thread. Darkling is here.

Here's the same spot on my machine, compared with yours (from a couple of posts back).

Appears to be a little less shiny on my box - that's you on the left, me on the right:
Image

Took me a while to find the exact spot, so here's a celURL for the masses:
cel://SyncOrbit/Sol:Earth:Moon/2012-10-11T08:10:38.97909?x=XVROS8aGDA&y=nw+F0/9xAg&z=2ayxMjUjFg&ow=0.955623&ox=0.0474684&oy=-0.184167&oz=0.224974&select=Sol:Earth:Moon&fov=26.7882&ts=100000&ltd=0&p=1&rf=70255511&lm=2176&tsrc=0&ver=3

BTW, the above celURL will only work if you apply these textures to our own moon.
(eg. as AltSurfaces):

Code: Select all

AltSurface "Icy Moon 03" "Sol/Earth/Moon"
{
   Texture       "icy-moon_03.*"
   NormalMap       "icy-moon_03_normal.*"
   SpecularTexture   "icy-moon_03_spec.*"
   # Color [ 0.85 0.85 1.0 ]
   SpecularColor [ 0.52 0.52 0.45 ]
   SpecularPower 25.0
}

AltSurface "Icy Moon 03 INVERT" "Sol/Earth/Moon"
{
   Texture       "icy-moon_03.*"
   NormalMap       "icy-moon_03_normal_2.*"
   SpecularTexture   "icy-moon_03_spec.*"
   # Color [ 0.85 0.85 1.0 ]
   SpecularColor [ 0.52 0.52 0.45 ]
   SpecularPower 25.0
}

AltSurface "Icy Moon 04" "Sol/Earth/Moon"
{
   Texture       "icy-moon_04.*"
   NormalMap       "icy-moon_04_normal.*"
   SpecularTexture   "icy-moon_04_spec.*"
   # Color [ 0.85 0.85 1.0 ]
   SpecularColor [ 0.52 0.52 0.45 ]
   SpecularPower 25.0
}

AltSurface "Icy Moon 05" "Sol/Earth/Moon"
{
   Texture       "icy-moon_05.*"
   NormalMap       "icy-moon_05_normal.*"
   SpecularTexture   "icy-moon_05_spec.*"
   # Color [ 0.85 0.85 1.0 ]
   SpecularColor [ 0.52 0.52 0.45 ]
   SpecularPower 25.0
}

Nice work Fenerit. :)
