Rectangles for text...

Post #1by Hungry4info » 14.07.2012, 07:20

I suspect you guys are going to beat me senseless for this, but I'm having what appears to be a font problem in Celestia on my new laptop.

> Toshiba Satellite P775
> 2.50 GHz processor.
> 6 GB RAM
> 64-bit Win 7 Home Premium

All the text in Celestia appears like solid blue rectangles fitted to the size of the letters that should be there. There's some other issues such as the star flares not showing up. So it sounds like a graphics problem, but the graphics don't look bad. I can get ring shadows on Saturn and mie in Earth's atmosphere. To be sure, I tried to update my video drivers but I seem to be at the latest version (or windows's Device Manager fails at finding newer drivers).

So maybe it's a font issue? I modified the .cfg file to verify that the font it was using was in Celestia's /fonts folder. I even tried changing the font to the default.txf font, but it did not work. Cycling through render paths did not work either. When I go to Help -> OpenGL info, I get

I searched on the forum for threads that might help but I didn't find any that were helpful.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. It would be nice to have Celestia portable :)
Current Setup:
Windows 7 64 bit. Celestia 1.6.0.
AMD Athlon Processor, 1.6 Ghz, 3 Gb RAM
ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics

It sounds to me like it could be a bug in the graphics driver.
You'll need to manually download the most recent graphics driver installer from Intel's Web site.

Try to set as "application controlled" the antialiasing and the antialiasing-transparency within the graphic card's control panel.
Never at rest.

This sounds similar to the problem I observed when shopping for a laptop awhile ago. As far as I remember, this affected the Infotext at the top left of the screen on some, but not all, laptops.
It seemed to be certain brand/graphic chip combinations that were affected, but there was just too many combinations to be sure of the cause.
I assumed it was due to certain OEM's not having latest drivers installed, so I suggest that you first make sure you have the very latest driver for your chip.

Sorry, that's all I can suggest.
