have made a new video in Celestia

this showing the "Dottie" asteroid in the movie Armageddon, in maybe the same size as it was said in the movie, around the same size as Texas.

This will show a Pacific Ocean impact, as Truman said
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obNbz70GUkA

Now, if it's a Pacific Ocean impact, which we think it will be
it'll create a tidal wave three miles high, travel at 1,000 miles an hour
covering California and washing up in Denver.
Japan's gone. Australia's wiped out.
Half the world's population'll be incinerated by the heat blast...
and the rest'll freeze to death from nuclear winter.
That's unbelievable.
Well, actually, this is as real as it gets.
Well, it's coming, right now
right for us, at 22,000 miles an hour.
Not a soul on Earth can hide from it.

Hey. Have you seen a NASA video of the Moon based on LRO imagery these days? I recreated it in Celestia: Go to the center of the Earth, hide everything but planets, center, straighten and lock on Moon, and speed up to 200000X. Enjoy: La Luna en 2012.

Very nice, I really like it.
I wonder if your "planes" would help me in making a photon torpedo. I have tried so many other things, this might just be the ticket. :)

Thanks,
Tim

Yes, this one uses the vertices of an icosahedron to orient the planes, so you end up with 6 (double-sided) planes. The planes are still quite noticeable from certain orientations, probably subdividing the icosahedron into a geodesic sphere may help remedy this at the cost of requiring more image data and a more complex mesh.

For good reasons, Celestia offers to get rid of the clouds with a click (I-key), in order to have an unobstructed view of the surface! For curious people who have no idea what the surface of Venus looks like, this info is definitely instructive.
And so why do it ?

I find this NASA PhotoJournal image for example very worthwhile:

Image

[Three-dimensional perspective views of Venusian Terrains composed of reduced resolution left-looking synthetic-aperture radar images merged with altimetry data from the Magellan spacecraft.]

My personal reservations are rather due to the fact that radar mapping has possibly a quite different interpretation from photographic surface imaging! More precisely: Radar images are black

-- where the surface is smooth, and reflects the radar signal away from the spacecraft,
and white
-- where the surface is rough (on the radar scale of 12.5 cm), and backscatters the radar signal;

Furthermore, your quoted cloud image,
Image

is NOT what the eye would see! It has been taken in UV light by Pioneer Venus Orbiter, at wavelengths strongly absorbed by sulfur compounds in the atmosphere. This technique strongly enhances patterns in the clouds caused by upper atmospheric winds.

The view of Venus in visible light looks MUCH more dull and far less colored:
Image
That's also how Venus looks in my (fairly big) telescope...

More 12 Go, it's so waste of space :( for most of celestia users...
I am quite sure that you are simply wrong here. A principal strategy of the Celestia Devs has always been to visualize the Universe as closely as possible to reality (i.e. with unaided vision). Whether YOU like that or not. Since its start in 2002, Celestia has been downloaded from SourceForge more than 10 million times..This great success may well be viewed as a confirmation of our basic philosophy ;-)

John,

JVV wrote:now i have 1.25 Terabits and am planning on ( at least )doubling that this summer
i might go to 8 TB

The real point is to ephasize the ridiculously LOW price per GB of storage these days!
Over here, I typically pay ~ 50 Eur for a fast hd with 1TB = 1000 GB capacity...

Hence storing 12 GB cost 12 * 50 /1000 = 0.6 Eur < 1$!

See my post above as concerns the big difference of Venus in UV light compared to Venus in natural colors. (sorry the URL changed during the past few days, so these Venus images might not have been visible recently). I also recommend to read (and understand!) the figure captions before quoting images along with false claims...

It is not a matter of personal taste what textures we use in Celestia. Rather the agreed criterion is to get as closely as possible to natural color imaging. And the Venus clouds look dull and rather featureless in natural colors:

Every user is free to substitute his/her own images instead.

The sun isn't yellow.

And if the sun were yellow enough to noticeably tint the clouds on Venus, why is it not also tinting the clouds here on Earth?

Don't know about you but I generally see it as (blinding) white, at least when it is high enough in the sky not to be strongly affected by atmospheric scattering. Spend some time outside maybe?

J.T.K. wrote:The sun is a yellow dwarf (G2V).
The terminology of the colour of stars is rather interesting. Just because a star is conventionally termed "yellow" does not mean that it is in fact yellow... e.g. the Sun is pretty close to white (as is in fact demonstrated in the temperature scale picture you posted!)

Distance from Sun,
Why should that affect anything?

99,5% sulfuric clouds,
the sulfuric and carbonic atmosphere , you don't never see the color of sulphur near volcano ?
The clouds on Venus are made up of sulphuric acid, not sulphur. Ever seen sulphuric acid? It's colourless. As is carbon dioxide.

A different atmosphere (O?, N? and O3) with clouds of water.
These substances are colourless also, at least in the quantities that are relevant for the colour of the clouds...
