Any way to export a "crystal sphere"?

So, I had this idea that Celestia would be wonderful to use in conjunction with full-on 3D renderings, and could be a very useful tool to get accurate (and pretty) starfields into something like, for instance, 3DS Max.

My idea was to somehow export the *entire* 360 view of stars and use it as a map on an inward-normalled sphere that would be made really big and surround the objects in the modelling/rendering program.

I don't see any way to do this though. Could this be done with a script of some sort? (I don't know the LUA or CEL languages but I'm wiz at Perl so I could probably pick it up in about a day--code is code).

Quite some time ago I wrote a Lua script to display the entire sky as the six faces of a cube. It's somewhere here on the Forum....
