Two thoughts:

1.) Isn't QT4 cross-platform? One could then use the QT4 version on Mac OS, Windows and Linux. Or have I overestimated how much of Celestia is written in QT4?

2.)
A 1.6.1 release would admittedly update the astronomical database of Celestia 1.6.0, but it would come also with a number of remaining bugs
Is it possible to separate the astronomical database from the rest of the code, and release it as a mega add-on?

Very preliminary builds of the QT4 variant of Celestia have indeed been done for all three platforms at one time or another. The user interface still needs a lot of work, though.

The updated astronomical catalogs are available on SourceForge. See

A number of us are building the Qt4 version of Celestia very frequently at least for Windows and Linux. Celestia-Qt is perfectly stable. It has definitely fewer bugs than 1.6.1, despite the many new features. Nothing "very preliminary" about it.
The user interface still needs a lot of work, though.

Since I don't have the ability to build it myself, the most recent version I saw probably is way out of date. I seem to recall that many menu items were not yet available.

To make it more available for others to test, it would be a big help if an appropriate QT Creator .pro configuration file could be uploaded to SourceForge.

It's in src/ for some reason.

Well 1.6.1 is now out, guess we can move on to 1.7.0 now.

After about two hours of testing today, I think I can report with strong confidence that the recent OS X Snow Leopard upgrade ( 10.6.8 ) has solved two major bugs I reported on the Mac version : textures rendering and LUA overlay problems. :D

I've tested Celestia 1.6.1 on my two Macs : a Mac Mini (late 2009) and a Mac Book Pro 13" (late 2010). On both machines, I'm yet unable to reproduce the issues I've reported !
