Hello :)

Sorry, no updates for now. At September i will be at the Greek Navy and my computer for some reason can't support Celestia until my next (and hope finally) format, so no Sky River Project for now :( . Just a question. My project was about filling our Galaxy with stars and i notice that i was the only one with this idea. Is somewhere an addon creator with the same thinking, filling our Galaxy with stars? Is there an another similar project or the Sky River is alone at all? Is somebody interest with this project?

Sorry for the bad English...

Spaceman,

Have you tried the 2million star addon?
It's available on the Celestia MotherLode at
http://www.celestiamotherlode.net/catal ... _stars.php
down near the bottom of the page.

Having a large number of stars causes performance problems:
1. They take a long time to load, so you have to create a binary database so they'll load faster.
2. They cause Celestia to run slowly while it determines which stars are being obscured by foreground objects.

Trying out the existing large database will give you some feeling for how much things are slowed down.

But it's well known that Celestia uses essentially ALL galactic stars of which the distances (& 2d coordinates) are reasonably well known. Since Celestia is 3d, distances are needed.... We would use more stars if there were more with "good" distances.

So in this project of yours, I suppose you want to generate the stars randomly in 3d? With what sort of spacial distribution? Or do you just care to have some nice shiny dots in the background?

I had this addon (i don't have Celestia for now but soon i will install it again) and never had performance problems. Of course Celestia need more time to read 2.000.000 stars but i had not serious problems, even if my computer isn't a high end super machine :? . But i will test it again, hopefully soon.

That's right, random fictional stars and not just a background created by Rassilon's Globular Star Cluster Generator :) .
