Vanishing Stars

Ok something weird going on. When I goto Wolf 359 the star disappears if I look directly at it but if I look off to the side I can see it.

I removed the test asteroid I had there and it still does it. I also noticed it does it with Banard's Star as well and I've had nothing orbiting there. :(

By the way this is with build 4522

Try 4530. There may have been a couple files that were included in this build by mistake that could be causing this. I think they were taken back out in version 4530.

I was looking at Wolf 359 and I didn't see any problems. I'm not sure what you are trying to show with your images either. Could you provide a url that shows the star is not there?

Those screens are what happens when I look directly at it. If I look just off to the side I can see the star. As I pan towards it the star shrinks. When I look directly at it there is nothing there.

Here is looking directly at the star.

I'm sorry but I can't reproduce your problem. When Celestia is running, hit ctrl c to copy the url. When you post here hit the liitle tab that says Code and paste the url in between the 2 brackets. Also try this url and see if you can see the star.

Code: Select all

cel://Follow/Wolf 359/2008-10-27T18:02:41.13898?x=AIyHVyeVHng&y=UHAILZodfv///////////w&z=AIaGhxTZdSU&ow=0.805512&ox=-0.000349278&oy=-0.592573&oz=0.00292752&select=Wolf 359&fov=25.4215&ts=1&ltd=0&p=0&rf=122759&lm=2048&tsrc=0&ver=3

Just for Steve's information, and for you Reiko...

I get exactly the same problem with this star using Celestia SVN 4530.
If I simply use ENTER-TYPE NAME-ENTER to go to Wolf 359, I end up with
a star directly in front of me which simply cannot be seen.

In order to view the star, you have to fiddle around with the viewpoint, until - as
Reiko says - the star reappears. Perhaps related to this particular type of star?

Again, just FYI.

Here is the URL

Code: Select all

cel://Follow/Wolf 359/2008-10-27T19:15:00.46273?x=APh0AyiVHng&y=eLX4KZodfv///////////w&z=AJgvYBLZdSU&ow=0.805512&ox=-0.000351131&oy=-0.592573&oz=0.00292501&select=Wolf 359&fov=27.2898&ts=1&ltd=0&p=0&rf=3790739&lm=2048&tsrc=0&ver=3

It also does it for Banard's Star

Code: Select all

cel://Follow/Barnard's Star/2008-10-27T19:16:42.86439?x=AHhsS9Pn+SP//////////w&y=ADiEizrEBq3//////////w&z=AMgEcQrS6x3//////////w&ow=0.372945&ox=-0.0455623&oy=0.918944&oz=-0.119909&select=Barnard's Star&fov=27.2898&ts=1&ltd=0&p=0&rf=3790739&lm=2048&tsrc=0&ver=3

I would try to use the URL you posted but I don't know how. :?

Reiko try clicking on this. celurl
I'm sorry, I should have realized. It has to be a link. With Linux I can paste it into the "go to url" pop up window. With Windows, I'm not sure how to paste it in. I always just clicked on the link. But for you to create one you need to create an html file or to create one here you need to surround the celurl with the url tags. That is what I should have done. My mistake. The celurl I provided will probably not work either though. You have a problem that I can't reproduce on my system.

Are you by any chance using Vista too? Since Bob has the same problem, maybe this is Vista related. I still see a star when I use your celurl. I'm using XP.

Clicking on the link should start Celestia and take you to the star. The executable has to be named celestia.exe to work though. I always put the build revision number in the name of the executables I upload to my site. So unless they are renamed to celestia.exe, they won't work cel urls. I mention that in the read me files.
You must be using a setting that is not getting copied into the celurl that I haven't figured out yet. But I did get something. Look at my previous post. This may be related. Not sure though.

I am using OpenGL 2.0 path, but - as Reiko says - it occurs in any of the paths used.
Here's some more interesting (at least to me) information though...

When I do manage to get the star rendered by playing around with the viewpoint, I can
actually watch it disappear as a function of movement around the star's general area.
In other words, if I manage to get the star to appear on the left side of my screen,
I can actually watch it grow smaller and smaller until it does actually disappear
completely as I move my view point (via holding down left mouse button and moving
the mouse to the right.)

Quite interesting, and not any problem I have seen before.
As always, just FYI...

Thanks, Brain-Dead

I'm wondering if it is related to mstar.jpg

Chris try this url starproblem
If you move the star towards the edge of the screen, the star gets bigger. Move to the center of the screen, it gets smaller.

This url, the star disappears.
starproblem2
If you hold down the left mouse and move towards the edge of the screen, the star will appear.

Bob and Reiko must be using a different FOV? Maybe a different screen resolution?

After playing around with these stars, I noticed something else. Linux builds don't load these star textures. Is this by design? I was also wondering how these star textures were being assigned. I noticed this when I tried the celurls on Linux. The stars never disappear with Linux. The mstar.jpg texture is not loaded though.

The FOV was 1x or whatever it is in default. My screen resolution is 1280x800 in windowed mode.

Yeah, the folder it is in should be installed by the Celestia 1.5.1 installer. When it is installed, the associate cel files option should not be unchecked.
Great English. A double negative. My English teachers would have love that one. The line should probably read "When it is installed, the associate cel files option should remain checked." It is checked by default.
I'm going by memory here, but I think that is right. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong though.
I wouldn't worry about it. It is not that important that it work. If you start playing around, you might cause bigger problems.

I found the source of the bug and checked in a fix. If you get SVN version 4352, the problem should be gone.

The fix was just one line. There was incorrect test that resulted in an uninitialized variable, which eventually caused stars to be culled incorrectly. I'm surprised that this bug didn't appear earlier and happen with more stars.

Thanks to Reiko, Bob, and cartrite for the detailed bug reports!
