Celestia looks like crap

Post #1by TheJollyRajah » 14.06.2008, 01:39

I don't know much about computers, honestly. All I know is that I have a little over 2 gigs of ram.

I'm not experiencing bugs, but really just low quality performance. The textures are horrible, and everything looks like it was from an N64 video game system. Now, I don't know if I need add-ons or what.

I'm also running it on Vista, so maybe that's the problem.

Like I said, I suck with compters, and I honestly don't know what the specs mean. So please, if you help, please dumb it down for me.^_^

Celestia provides simply superb quality textures on my Vista machine, so I'd say that you probably need to update your graphics drivers to the latest versions.
Also, we could be of more help if you could accurately describe your system. Type, screen resolution graphics hardware, ram, etc.

Hope that helps a little, Bob

I'll try to explain my best, Bob.

Here are the specs listed on a sticker:
-AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor TK-53
-15.4" diagonal widescreen TruBrite display
-2048MB SDRAM
-120GB hard drive

There are more, but I know enough to say that they don't contribute to anything significant.

On the other side, it says "ATI", and right under that it says "RADEON", and below that it says graphics. It may be the graphics card; I really don't know.

I bought the PC six months ago. It's a Toshiba Satellite A215-S7416

I hope that helps. :)

Yes because you can expect friendly advice if the first thing you do is come in and say that the entire project looks like crap.

Well, I know that others here have had troubles with ATI and Radeon, so you may ask your question to them. Sorry, but I'm afraid that I simply don't know that much about this hardware and/or software. Please keep in mind though, that the first place you always need to look at is your graphics drivers. You might also do a search for "ATI" and/or Radeon drivers here on the forum, because I know that I've seen problems with those items referenced here before.

One other thing you might try too. While running Celestia, try pressing CTRL-V a few times to run through the different render paths. Your system may work better with "multitexture" rather than OpenGL 2.0... Just a thought for you.

Good luck.

Here I really agree, Andrew!

Choosing a provocative heading, "Celestia looks like Crap", as a newcomer is a rather tasteless introduction of that help-seeking person. Notably, if that person already realizes that he/she is a noob in computer matters...

Given the fact that Celestia has been downloaded > 6 000 000 times(!!) altogether, the above newbie friend might have easily guessed, how many hundred thousand users presumably don't have the slightest display problems (unlike him) ;-)

Good Doctor...

What you say is absolutely true. However, not all dialects and regional intricacies of the written language are meant in the same way. I believe that the gentleman above did not mean any disrespect. I simply think that (on his system) the display looks like crap. I didn't take it the same way that you did I don't think, but your point concerning a new user should certainly be noted by others. The best way to get help is to explain your problem, and then request help in a polite manner. I simply overlooked the "looks like crap" remark because of the aforementioned reasons.

Sorry Bob, then the thread's title should have been "Celestia looks like crap on my config"!
I agree with Fridger, this title is completely offensive... :x

I understand completely, Chris...

However, you guys also put up with me quite a bit, and I'm about as offensive as a person can get.

It is the nature of humanity to attack that which it does not like, even if the reason (assuming there is one) is limited to that individual's (if the term can apply) situation.

For the creator of this thread, he found his machine didn't run Celestia too well, so in his anger, he wrote that the entire program was "crap".

It's a simple overreaction, albeit, horridly (but not unexpectedly) rude.

And Bob, you don't offend me, lol :)
Current Setup:
Windows 7 64 bit. Celestia 1.6.0.
AMD Athlon Processor, 1.6 Ghz, 3 Gb RAM

Sorry if I offended anyone.

As Bob stated, I simply meant that "Celestia looks like crap" on my computer.

I think it also shows more disrespect to the "noob" when you have 5 posts that don't relate to the problem in any way. You know, the bickering really makes me want to come back in the future.

And Bob, I'll see what I can do and I'll try my best to fix it.

Take care.

Ah, don't let it bother you my friend. They piss me off all the time, but they also provide a wealth of information for my favorite (and just about only) activity.
These really are a great bunch of guys, but the English language is rarely understood by all in the same way. Come back any time, and just remember that your dealing (for the most part) with theoretical physicists, hard-nosed NASA people, and mostly the upper-crust of our societies.

Me? I'm definitely on the bottom-crust, but I take great pride in that fact. Hee, hee... :D

Also, to Hungry... YOU ain't pissed me off yet, so you haven't seen the real me (I don't think.) Not a problem though my friend. My wife says that I need a more relaxing hobby. Maybe she's right, but my other interest is women, so I doubt that she means that.

Come on here guys,
Can't we all just get along?

Oh, yes we didn't show enough respect to the "noob" after your provoking introductory heading ;-)

I usually pay respect to people who KNOW something, rather than to "distinguished noobs". So if you don't know about computers, tell us a nice poem, for example... If I like it, I'll pay respect to you, for sure.

There was a Good Doctor from France... Who definitely had ants in his pants...
He is well-respected and a very great guy, but your relativistic theory he will not buy...

Sue me...
Was an attempt at writing humorous poem to lighten the mood.

Well, I'm glad. Did you notice that I couldn't think of anything to rhyme with Germany though? I thought sure that you'd jump on me for that error. :D
You are definitely a great man, Good Doctor, and I for one really mean it when I say that I appreciate your scientific effort here. I want my Celestia as realistic as it can be so - again - your efforts are appreciated greatly by some of us out here in "Brain-Dead" land.

I'll shut up now.

Well observed, indeed ;-) . Notably, since virtually all prices have essentially doubled since the introduction of the Euro, including BEER!
