Can one ask WHY?
Also curious why we need another Earth at all since there are already a multitude of quality textures (along with their scientifically correct definitions)
freely available at wide variety of places related to Celestia.
Selden?

Sorry... I didn't mean to belittle your work, but now that you mention it, a couple of points here...
First of all, you state that you don't even know who the original authors of the textures were. If that's the case, then why are you taking credit for their work?
Second, the image map of Earth I see when I click on the appropriate links above is not something that can even be used in Celestia to represent the surface of the Earth. Am I the only person who sees an Earth texture which contains solid white continents? If so, why?
Finally, it looks very much to me like you just wish to get more people to the sites you're using, (and all of their Javascript machinations) so if I'm wrong about this, I apologize.
Like I said previously though... We already have a wealth of accurate representations of the Earth available.

-wel obviusly the guy got them from nasa site right ?, i dont think he paint the thing by himself. lol
-i take credit cz i processed them.
-the image is an png with transparecy thats why you cant see the land
-no i dont spam
HEY does anybody like my earth ? post something people!
by the way i think ultra hires earth textures are NOT necessary for celestia
its not shuttle simulator or something to orbit close to the surface of the earth
its more like ' how earth looks from space at this moment ? '

Re: MY EARTH
Okay, like I said I apologize. I know it's not easy to break into a new forum community, but I honestly
did not know why the images were even posted here. Please forgive me, and go ahead and post away if you like.
All you have to keep in mind is that I am definitely an old Brain-Dead Geezer.

Bob, be happy. It has ice.
But to the OP: you should always know where you got the original from. Usefullness becomes limited if that info is unavailable. Also, any issues with copyright is impossible to resolve without it.

..
..just to continue a bit what Bob and Runar were alluding to: from looking at your texture it is supposed to be kind of realistic (as opposed to fantasy where everything is allowed).
If you want some recognition for your work in this realistic category, then PLEASE
-- no release without precise links to the source of the raw data! Celestia is devoted to scientific visualization to a large extent. This implies that UNDOCUMENTED material is virtually useless!
I thought that Bob even denies accepting undocumented realistic textures for the Motherlode?
-- Secondly, you should add some basic installation README which also states the imaging format (.png, RGBA in your case), the size of the texture (2k in your case) and your real name or your user ID.
-- There should also be some brief statement in the README what you actually did relative to the scientific input texture, notably if you want to release textures that exist in dozens of copies (apart from differing in some fine tuning details). And OF COURSE you are not becoming the creator/owner of a texture that was just modified slightly relative to the published scientific input texture by NASA!
You got to acknowledge the original texture source.
etc.
Once you have decided this way to play in a somewhat more serious "league", then you will also receive some encouragements by others in form of nice posts...Don't forget, Celestia is > 6 years old, and the community comprises many real wizards in image manipulation!
So it really takes a bit of an effort from your side before you can collect oooh's and aaah's wrto your textures

Re: MY EARTH
I know exactly where he got it from, not from me, but one of my past sources. This is obviously the the work of Mario of the now lost Space-Graphics.com. The site has long since gone down but Fridger used to work with him regularly on Mars textures. I have no idea what and or why Space-Graphics closed but it was an incredible resource for many of us. Many of my Earth and Mars textures had some of his work in them.

Ah, never say never!!
Past texture releases, Hmm let me think about it
Thanks for your understanding.

Re: MY EARTH
So do you understand why I raised the issue in the first place now?
All may not be lost, however. Sometimes - if you inform the author of what you would like to do with his work - he may give you permission to do what you'd like to do. Normally, the permission can be gotten as long as the author realizes that Celestia is an open-source project, and that others will not profit from his work.
I'm not saying that this is always the case, but you can certainly try to talk about it with the author.
Thanks, Brain-Dead Bob

Re: MY EARTH
The beauty of those hi-res textures is they look good from space and close up. Since they are VT it doesn't cook your computer viewing them far out in space.JAY_1976 wrote:-wel obviusly the guy got them from nasa site right ?, i dont think he paint the thing by himself. lol

Indeed, that's the kind of textures, we are talking about...
(reduced here by a factor 2.5 in resolution/size , compared to Celestia )

Although they may NOT be necessary, they are certainly desired by some of us. See the Good Doctor's images in the previous post? Don't you wish to explore ANY world in this kind of detail?
I know that I do.
