We are working on updating my Watermask at Celestial Matters though.

No news on the subject as yet?
I've put together a landmask without residual light but the program I wrote to add a user specified amount of light never worked well with Windows XP. My plan was to write a script that add a user specified amount of light while decompressing the file.
I also was going to wait until I get get enough VT's made so I can build a web page showing examples (images) of the different amounts of light as compared to no light. I'm still a ways of doing all this but I'll upload the no-light file to my new site later tonight and add a few words linking to the no-light file.
EDIT My site now contains the "no light added" file and is available here

When a normal map is used in OGL2 render path, a little residual light on the spec map will have a little light rendered on the sunlit side of a mountain in addition to the shadow rendered on the other side. If too much residual light is added to the spec map then the texture doesn't look right and it looks kind of like plastic. When there is no residual light, only the shadows are rendered. If you get the right balance, a little residual light added renders a more natural scene.
