As I commented elsewhere a little while ago, I'd suggest the most logical definition would be that a 'minor moon' is one small enough that it's effects aren't considered when calculating the orbits of the other moons. The easist way to determine if that's the case would be to look at the constants defined on the spice file for some minor moon of the planet in question (they're listed in the release file for each ephemeris). The moons whose effects are calculated will have a 'GMXXX' entry in the constants list, where XXX is the object number.

Someone managed to define Pluto as a dwarfplanet in a satisfactory way? I feel the barycenter's orbit should be shown to make clear the relation to the sun, but it's not correct... see what I mean? (in any case I'm not sure we can define the barycenter as dwarf to see it's orbit...)

BTW, the colors for dwarfplanets and minormoons have been implemented in the code yet? (can we tune the start script after a build?)

Chris,

I forgot to add support to set dwarf planet and minor moon orbits and labels color from celx scripting in my last commit.
This is done now. You just need to update your source to revision 4288. Then, you'll be able to write code like this:

Code: Select all

celestia:setlinecolor("dwarfplanetorbits", 0, 0.3, 0.6)
celestia:setlinecolor("minormoonorbits", 0, 0.5, 0.4)
celestia:setlabelcolor("dwarfplanets", 0, 0.4, 0.9)
celestia:setlabelcolor("minormoons", 0, 0.6, 0.4)

If we're going to be that picky, why not one for SDO's? NEO's? Plutinos? Centaurs? Cubewanos? Trojans? etc.

I personally think "asteroid" works just fine.

Now I'm probably going to get a lot of opposition for this comment, but IMHO, Pluto and Eris should be classed as planets in the ssc files. In my opinion, it's not "icy, past Neptune, it's a comet" but "the size of Pluto or bigger and it's a planet".
