Hi,

From time to time I will put here for download some fictional asteroids...
They are completly free, you can do whatever you want with them.
They will be released as it, without textures, just the 3ds file.

Hi Chris cool idea,I think the models would be better as a cmod file ,otherwise you tend to get a nasty seam running down 180 degree longitude line,Jestr

Well this one is ok in Celestia (I will test them) and in 3ds the user is able to map it as he want...

Chris,actually the problem is only noticeable in Celestia,if you give the asteroid a texture (not a problem with the texture itself though).Cheers,Jestr

Ok, I will make a try... but even in this case, I will let users to do the cmod conversion after mapping... the goal is to propose asteroids, rocks and dust, then each one will have to do the mapping depending his necessity and taste...

I have done several test and I don't get the seam on those models... perhaps it will appear on model with a much higher number of poly?

The textuures are very hard to map on those guys. There are many kind of texture distortions which are visible on them.

Yep... but I think with a bit of imagination, one can use this to do something cool... but yes it's not so easy...

I've tried the models with some textures mapped on them. The seam is visible on all the previous asteroids, but it's subtle and hard to find. However, it strikes my eyes when I don't expect it, while rotating around the object. The cmod version has the same problem. This is an annoying problem with most asteroid models in Celestia. I don't know what to do in the modeler to remove it. It even doesn't show in the modeler. :(

In all case that cannot be a problem of models or textures, we need Chris to enlighten us on this...

I was just wondering about the last (10th by now) asteroid. It's surface looks like wind or water eroded. What are the erosion mechanisms in space? (solar radiation and wind, impacts?) And do they erode an asteroid homogenously?

Those asteroids are purely fantasy. Look at the ninth one. Looks like an old piece of dead tree to me, not a rock. They may be used in some Flash Gordon addon, however ;-)

All wrong, the last ones are some kind of metalic core from bigger bodies... all mineral part has gone in dust during many thousand years of impacts in an asteroid belt... ...no? it cannot be? :oops:

there are lots of polygons viisible on the last onbe. I don't like it. It's crude. Should be smoother.

Indeed they are some test, I'm trying to do complex with the minimum of poly.... I fact the last ones need some long hand adjustements at vertex level, and I don't have time for this...

Later I will release one full of triangles... so prepare you for not screaming :wink:

Nope. Comets are balls of dust retained by the low self gravity of the comet. We already have some nice examples of real comets, and they don't look like your model at all.
