With just taking a (hampered) ride in Celestia 1.5.0 on my old computer, I noticed something that looked not as smooth as it perhaps could be.
Celestia very nicely started up in the right locale version (german in my case), but then when I selected one of the scripts, "Demo" in this case, that come with Celestia it was run in english.
Well that is no real problem, but I was just thinking if we could not also localise those "official" scripts that come with Celestia in a later version.
What do you think of that idea?
Just my 2 cents.

The demo.cel and start.cel scripts along with the guide.cel, copying and control.txt files are already localized in several languages, but not in German, yet. The localized versions of these files are in the 'locale' folder. As an example, French users just need to paste a copy of the demo_fr.cel, start_fr.cel guide_fr.cel, copying_fr and control_fr.txt files in the celestia base folder to run the demo, start scripts, ... in French.
In the upcoming Celestia 1.5.1 version, there will be no need to paste these files in the celestia base folder anymore. They will be read directly from the 'locale' folder.

Thanks for the info Vincent.
Now I know what I will do the next few days.
When I am done translating the files can I upload them to SourceForge or do I need an account there?
If I would need an account, could I then just send you the files?
Yes, that with controls.txt I also noticed just a few minutes ago.

Guckytos

Vince, that's true for the CVS but not for the basic installation (at least WIN32).Vincent wrote:The localized versions of these files are in the 'locale' folder.

Christian, you can save yourself the work.
All these (german speaking) files are on my plate already - but not sent to Christophe T. yet.

Then please go ahead and send them to Christophe.
If you have some spare time, you might have a look at my translations as well. I sent an updated de.po yesterday, but my time is very limited at the moment and I'm not quite sure about some messages. A lot could be improved for sure.

Okay. As we discussed already some time ago, I will take care of the .po for the next release.steffens wrote:If you have some spare time, you might have a look at my translations as well.

Thanks Ulrich, I didn't check this out...
These files only represent an extra size of about 400 Ko, so I think
they could be included in the Windows package.
However, since the total size of the 'locale' folder is about 2 Mo, and
since it should still grow up with the addition of new translation files,
another option would be to distribute the standard package exclusively
in English, and provide aside a 'language package' installer that would
simply paste the locale folder in the celestia base folder...
Do you have any opinion about that?
Edit: In the meanwhile, the translated files above mentionned can be
downloaded from: http://celestia.cvs.sourceforge.net/cel ... tia/locale

That sounds reasonable to me.

Well, I actually thought about helping with the translation about two weeks ago. Now I have COPYING_de, controls_de.txt, demo_de.cel and guide_de.cel ready for review; ~40 per cent of start_de.cel is also complete. Now I see that Adirondack already did the work.
Maybe I can help with the review of the existing files instead?
I'm not too bad in the German spelling and grammar and I also do understand the English language well (even though my written English could certainly be much better ...)
Bye

@ Christian and Andreas:
I'm somewhat surprised that you are surprised that I already have this stuff on my hard drive.
You both should have known what I'm doing since Celestia 1.3.1: providing german speaking versions.
I know that you both know that, and that you both use(d) the german version of 1.4.1. Are you blind?

Ulrich,
of course I know about your German Celestia versions. But I never used one: I prefer the English version (which has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of your work, it's just personal taste...)
With 1.5.0, the localization is part of the distribution.
I thought you were also going to provide your own German versions in the future. You didn't do the translations for the new 1.5.0 release, did you?? And until today there are no German versions of the mentioned files provided with the distribution (also not in CVS). Maybe I should have asked before, but don't mind about that ...
What do you think about helping with the review?
Bye
Andy
