Is Kaguya or the NASA lunar probe to be launched in 2008 going to change this cenario?

I know it's weird, but seriously, we have better maps of Mars than Luna because, quite simply, Mars has gained more attention by newer spacecraft than Luna has. I am sure Kaguya and Lunar Reconaissance Orbiter will get us some better maps.

Well the moon was a long time not interesting for mankind.

"Been there, seen that wasteland, now let's look for more interesting stuff."

That's what the people thought after the end of th Apollo missions. A very big mistake in my opinion, but understandable. The agencies wanted money to explore further and the politicians wouldn't have spent money on something that had already been explored and shown nothing interesting (in their opinion).

Hungry4Info: What about the data from SMART-1? Shouldn't that be already accessible? As far is I know this probe also cartographed the moon. In different spectral bands.

Well, it?€™s up to you, although I don?€™t see the point in maintaining excess information in tiles. Anyway, your work commands respect.
With best regards, Robert

If you can find the data, great! But I doubt it's accessible. SMART-1 was a European probe, and the European Spaces Agency is notorous at not revealing much information (Venus Express, anyone?).

I'm going to do a search and see if I can find some SMART-1 data.
