Celestia File Icons

Post #1by Orphu of Io » 18.01.2008, 06:53

I've been working on icons for different file types which Celestia uses. If there is any interest, I'll put together icon groups with various sizes. Post whether you like them, hate them, or suggestions. I'm not much of an artist and my graphics skills aren't great, so my feelings won't be hurt if you think they are crap.

I'm still working on program icons as well as icons for CMOD and XYZ.

Good idea, don't know why no-one's thought of this before.

... perhaps these would be confused with the SSC ones below. eg. I think the first one (with the Earth) would be good as an SSC icon. I think these CEL and CELx ones need to indicate more the idea of a script or code in some way.

I like most of the remaining ones below...not sure however how good the first STC one (with the stars) will look at 16x16 size.
I like the Saturn one for an SSC icon.

I assume you'll also be removing the labels from them.
Good stuff.

Thank you for the feedback.

Yes, I agree. To be honest, I wasn't real happy with those. With the CELX icons, I tried to mimic the Lua logo with solar system objects but that's probably a bit obscure. Originally I tried using text that one would find in a script but it's not very clear on the lower resolution icons. I'm still working on others.

I like most of the remaining ones below...not sure however how good the first STC one (with the stars) will look at 16x16 size.
I like the Saturn one for an SSC icon.
For 16x16 icons, I'm planning on using simplified images: Basically the images themselves and not the full document style icon:

The globular cluster doesn't really look good at 16x16 anyway and isn't really appropriate for STC files. I'll probably drop that one.

I assume you'll also be removing the labels from them.
I actually intended to keep those but it's a trivial matter to include icons with and without the extension labels.

The .dsc files so far concern galaxies ONLY in the official distribution. But your image is M57 in Lyra, which is a nebula. So why didn't you choose one of the great galaxies instead of M57?

Those icons rock, hopefully the same icons will be used for all OS 's (Win,Mac,Linux)
By the way, with what programs have you made them.

These are marvelous icons but they are in the first place to tell what the file does so here are a few things that could improve it.
Making it asier separatable on sight. And make it easier to intuitive know what they are for.

CEL and CELX
Something that indicates the presence of a story(script) would be very handy when guessing it's function. Also something added on CELX (if celx is the next "version" of cel) but let them for the rest look similar, let them have a similarity.

DSC: don't put something right in the middle. Let it be a little bit to the side. Take a picture of a galaxie or two(a little one a side of a big one) for the reason that there are only galaxies described in those files.
And mayby a star at another corner.

SSC: want to see a planet orbiting a star. (Star on middel or bottom side and an orbit with a planet on the upper or down side)
Like the earth and the moon or the picture of jupiter and it's moons orbiting a star.

STC: mayby just a bunch of stars not a galaxie. And that big and little star looks a little bit too much like the lua icon. (Might be something that colorblind people would easily miss.)

DDS: Don't do dds in black and white do black tiles over a planet like the earth. People might think that dds doesn't supports colors.

CMOD: a 3d model in green wireframe with a background that changes color from one side to another goes from grey(3dapp) to black(Celestia and throw some stars in the black part of the background). This would be something easie to recognise.

XYZ: just make some orbits, lines, rotations, arrows on a dark background.
Light colors on a dark background and darker colors on a light background. (Make sure the difference between CMOD and xyz is big enough to spot easily also for colorblind people)

Honestly, I didn't really think about that but thanks for pointing it out. I decided to use M57 since it looks nice at different sizes. It'll be simple enough to use a galaxy instead though.

Thank you and thanks for the feedback. I'm using Photoshop CS and the plugin here:

I'm not really married to any of these icons and if anyone wants to contribute their own images, I'm all for it. Perhaps it could be a community project if there is enough interest. I've been using Celestia for a long time and wanted to make some sort of contribution.

Use Gimp for a community project. This way anybody can join in making icons because Gimp is free!!!

My two cents worth again...

I like any and/or all of the above, and I like having the ability to use
or save the posted pictures in order to make my own icons.

Anyone can do this given the number of free icon-creation programs
which are widely available on the net.

Many thanks to Orphu for the topic and the posts.

I did try idea a few years back. I had a few icons, but there wasn't much interest back then. Celestia didn't have the following it does know, people didn't customize there Os and icons as much as they do know.

I will be interested to see how this goes, they are great icons and I will use them for sure.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. As Bob alluded to, the png images in my original post can be easily resized and converted to icon formats. I'll go ahead and post the icon groups of what I have now- with and without the extension labels. I'll get those uploaded as soon as I can.

I had to split the ICO archives into two parts due to the 500KB file size limit of my free web host. You get what you pay for.

PNG formats are also available.

Many thanks here my friend. Very easy to download and use, so I
THANK YOU for the effort here. Very nice collection to choose from.

Take care, Brain-Dead

Wouldn't be interesting to keep a basic common frame for all related Celestia icons even in 16?—16 ? It would be easier to keep in mind what is celestia and what isn't. Indeed your large icons are all based on white page and the extension name written.

Hi Orphu! :D
I changed immediately all the icons for Celestia related files!
Would you please create also icons for "cfg", "cmod", "cms", and "dat" files, so Celestia folders are complete? :)
Thanks a lot!

I agree. I'm still working on making the smaller icons better as well as new icons.
